tween fashion: transitioning into fall
This tween fall fashion post is sponsored by Desert Hills Premium Outlets.
With the kids all officially back in school, it’s time to think about great transitional wardrobe pieces for fall. Last night was the Harvest Moon, did you catch it? That means that autumn is next week and time to head out shopping for fall outfit essentials. My fashionable tween and I did just that recently at the Desert Hills Premium Outlets in Cabazon, California.
When you’re an adult, it is smart to invest in key seasonal pieces – a great boot, the perfect swimsuit, a little black dress… Price shouldn’t really matter when it comes to these. However, with kids, price is everything. They will only wear their new seasonal clothes for one season most likely, sometimes growing out of them before the season ends.
With Savannah approaching her tween years, though, I can’t skimp on quality or style. She cares more than ever about her outfits, if they are currently trending and if her friends will like them. Tricky… without local premium outlets! Yeah, we are super lucky to have the Desert Hills Premium Outlets so close to us (about 20 minutes from Palm Springs). There, Savannah can find just about everything she needs for her fall wardrobe from sweaters and skirts to boots and hair accessories. Buy pieces that mix and match to maximize your $$!
Here in the desert, fall transition pieces are a little milder. We exchange shorts for jeans and on-trend pants…
…and grab slouchy knit cardigans that can still allow a breeze.
Skirts require tall socks and boots as well.
One of the coolest things about being a mom to a girl is getting to dress her. File it with Barbie dream wedding as a top aspiration of a 6 year old. While it is super fun to dress them when they are toddlers, it might be even more fun to subtly suggest styles when they are older. This shopping trip was a bit of a throwback Thursday #TBT as we chose fall pieces that were inspired by my own youth – cat and flower everything.
My mom used to tell me, “you were born in the wrong time.” I was always very into music and fashion from the 60’s and 70’s, still am. I loved flowers in my hair, flared jean bottoms, embroidered tops… even sewed my own “hippie tops” to wear to music festivals. yep. It should come as no surprise, then, that when I was shopping with Savannah in Claire’s for accessories, I gravitated to the flowered headbands. Luckily, she nearly beat me to the same section.
My fringed purse from the 90s or early 2000s is one of her favorites to carry. It is pretty awesome when you can mix old and new pieces to create unique looks. I’m happy Savannah understands this chic style tip.
Savannah also has a small obsession with everything ancient Egypt, which I have always found fascinating myself. She flipped her wig over all of the head chains at the outlets and many fell into the shopping basket with the flowered headbands. Apparently, they make her feel like an Egyptian princess! If my mom would have let me out of the house with one on, I probably would have! I love her unique style and boldness with accessories.
