{Top 5} Detoxifying Digestive Tract Foods

The word “detox” gets thrown around a lot.  We are all drawn in by such words in hopes of magical transformations.  The honest truth to being healthy is there is no quick fix, no magic pill or food, but there are a lot of foods that will substantially improve your health.  When you improve your health from the inside, the outside follows–be it weight loss or glowing skin.

When I first was told I had IBS, I realized that I would have to give up a lot of familiar foods (eggs, red meat, cheese) and I admit it was painful.  Once I embraced my body and its quirks, I realized there was a whole world of flavor waiting.  Quickly it became not about giving up food but about altering my ingredients, which has worked to my benefit.  While I have always been obsessed with nutrition and exercise, having a condition like IBS has forced me to delve deeper into the world of detox foods.

For me, the most important type of detox is digestive tract related.  Cleansing, conditioning, and taking care of the digestive system will improve your overall health.  Not only will any gas, bloating or pains disappear, but you will also feel an increase in energy, reduced stress, and better sleep–at least I have.

There are so many foods out there that aid digestion, so just coming up with five was difficult, but here are my top 5 (6) ingredients that are must incorporates:

1.  Papaya – contains enzyme papain which boosts the efficiency of the digestive system

2.  Chia Seeds – can absorb up to 30 times their weight in water which aids in cleansing the digestive system (especially the colon).  The gel that forms shortens the time food stays in your GI tract.

3.  Ginger – contains anti-oxidants to rid your body of free radicals and also aids digestion by breaking down proteins faster, eliminates gas pains and other digestive woes (not to mention morning sickness).  It also cleanses the kidneys and bowels

4.  Lemon Juice – encourages the liver to produce bile which in turn aids in digestion.  It increases urination which helps purify it; and  it also helps with heartburn and constipation.

5.  Red Beets – increase detoxifying enzyme production in the liver.  They also contain betalains, which fight inflammation and neutralize toxins (also making them water-soluble and readily flushed from the body).

6. Turmeric – helps to cleanse the liver by encouraging bile production in the gallbladder.  It also scavenges free radicals and prevents new ones from forming.  The principal chemical component of turmeric is curcumin, which speeds up liver detox.  Curcumin prevents alcohol and other toxins from being converted into compounds that may be harmful to the liver.

Ah, I did it again!  This is more of a Top 6.
