sweetened camp coffee {desert camping}

I love to camp and when we are not camping, I’m thinking about camping.  Falling off the grid with my family is just one of my favorite things to do, which is why we escaped to Joshua Tree this past week.  I’m always looking for new camping gear, but there is one essential I cannot forget – my moka pot for camp coffee.

It is super hot down in the desert valley of Palm Springs.  Late summer is a bear and I just cannot wait for fall to arrive.  Soon, home will transform into a paradise, if we can just make it through the rest of the season.  Our closest escape from the desert heat is the high desert, where the temperature drops off about 10+ degrees.  It probably doesn’t feel like camping weather in Joshua Tree right now to others, but to us? Pretty great.

I’m addicted to coffee and when I go camping, my moka pot comes with.  A moka pot is an Italian stove top coffee maker that works unbelievably well over a campground stove.  Ensuring I get my daily cup of joe is pretty crucial to those around me as I can get a tad cranky without it.  Camp coffee is just one of those magical moments in a coffee-lovers life.  Waking up to the birds singing and the sun peeking over the horizon, then brewing up a cup of camp coffee?  yes.

I’ve been using sweetener alternatives for a long time and am quick picky about the ones I like.  My number one reason to break up with a sweetener is a funky aftertaste.  I want my coffee to taste like coffee, not like I licked the back of a spoon or something.  New to my camping supply box is Born Sweet™ ® Zing™ Zero Calorie Stevia Sweetener, a zero calorie sweetener made with natural ingredients – no icky artificial ingredients found here.  It has no funny aftertaste and it dissolves right into hot coffee super well.

Zing™ Zero Calorie Stevia Sweetener deliciously sweetens my camp coffee, which I take black.  I try to keep my perishable food items to a minimum when camping, and since I cannot stand the taste of powder creamers, I keep my camp coffee black with a hint of sweetness from Zing™ Zero Calorie Stevia Sweetener.

This day, I woke up to a gorgeous sunset and a steaming hot cup of coffee.  All afternoon, we adventured with the kids, wandering through the joshua trees and climbing up the boulder hills.  This is one of my favorite places on Earth to be… so serene and magical.  For a desert, there is a surprising variety of plant life from yucca to wildflowers to cactus.  You never know what will be around the next bend.

Once the sun started to set, we headed back to camp to enjoy the beautiful show.  As the sky turned from clear blue to orange and then pink, fading into black, we all sat quietly and watched the bats flying low and the shadows crawl over the land.  I, of course, brewed up more coffee for the occasion, because coffee is not just a morning beverage around here.
