natural stress relief: no Rx needed {detox bath}

Stress.  Anxiety.  These two things often come as a package deal, making life absolutely horrendous.  There are options though, even outside of the prescription bottle… flowers, herbs and other natural remedies that have been here all along.  Looking to the Earth for answers, we can all manage our daily stresses in a safe way!

Like any over-scheduled mom/business owner, I easily feel overwhelmed and stressed.  I have trouble sleeping, I lose my appetite over deadlines and I worry (OH do I worry!) that I am failing in every aspect of my life …at times.  I’ve found the answer to this type of stress is quiet.  It is meditation, prayer and finding that quiet moment to myself where I can breathe.  How funny that life can get that busy that one can forget to breathe… the basic necessity of a human being.

Then there is generalized anxiety, which is caused by stress and hormonal changes.  That is another beast.  Ever since my first child’s birth 8 years ago, I have struggled with overwhelming anxiety that comes on with no apparent reason.  It wears many hats, my anxiety and managing it has been difficult.

For many years I took Ativan.  I still have a valid prescription, actually.  It has never been something I liked to talk about as I saw taking pills as a personal weakness and worried others would judge me.  I’ll be the first to admit the prescription did control my anxiety.  In those unbearable moments, it made me functional… but… it also made me a bit foggy, less productive, less focused, even in the smallest doses.  So I set out on a personal mission to turn my Rx into natural medicine cabinet.

Dr. Bach formulated RESCUE Remedy nearly a hundred years ago and it is more relevant than ever.  Whether its a stressful day of deadlines, first day of school or just one of those days, these natural stress relief pastilles are perfect to chew on while you feel the anxiety of life kick in.  It provides a natural stress relief and contains active ingredients Star of Bethlehem, Clematis Cherry Plum, Impatiens, Rock Rose.  These flowers soothe irritability, help with shock/panic and provide a general calmness in times of stress.

These tasty candies are all natural and safe for everyone, including kids.  They come in a variety of forms and are non-habit forming and have no side effects… more than I can say for prescriptions.  Plus?  They come in a super cool tin with a fun push/turn closing mechanism!  Keep these in the car or in your purse so you have them whenever anxiety arises or a stressful situation presents itself.

I want to run this by you – chances are you have a magnesium deficiency.  Magnesium is the “relaxation mineral” and is used intravenously in emergency situations for life-threatening arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) among many other emergency room conditions.  We don’t get enough in our diets and your all-in-one vitamin does not contain anywhere near enough. Easy fix, take a magnesium supplement.  They are cheap and readily available!

Another easy way to absorb magnesium — a nice detox bath featuring Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate).  I have become a huge fan of detox baths and I feel like they have been life changing for me.  I urge you to try!!  Here is my favorite detox bath that features stress and anxiety relieving ingredients.

Creating your own salt soak is as simple as combining ingredients.  For this one, I combined epsom salt (for stress relieving magnesium), baking soda (detoxifying), chamomile (for stress relief, inflammation and smoother skin), arnica (for pain relief and healing of cuts and bruises) and pink Himalayan sea salt (detoxifying). Measurements are not important but I add epsom and baking soda in a 2:1 ratio.

Make sure to soak for about 40 minutes.  The first 20 minutes detoxes the body, while the remaining 20 minutes your body is absorbing minerals from your salt soak mix.  When you get out of the bath, drink plenty of water!

    That’s so funny. I just picked up epsom salt for the first time. I haven’t used it yet, but I’m looking forward to giving it a try.
