purging clutter {the great spring clean}

feather-dusterWith Easter behind us, the great annual shape up is nipping at our heels: spring cleaning.  There is nothing quite like the feeling you get after a deep, top to bottom clean and I’m pretty excited to dive in.  I’ll leave the cleaning tips to Martha Stewart and Pinterest while I shed some light on a dirty little secret of yours — and it’s hiding in those junk drawers.

I see organizing in three parts: dump, donate, delegate.  When tackling organization, the purge always should come first and I like to start with trash.  Rid your spaces of the obvious garbage you have been overlooking or jamming into drawers. Clear out the closets, the bookcases and those scary junk drawers, making sure to recycle as much as possible.

Next, we donate.  I tend to grow bored with my surroundings quite easily, and therefore generate a good amount of donatable goods. Of course there is also the kids.  Kids create a constant cycle of goods entering and leaving the house as they develop physically and mentally, leaving mounds of gear someone else could enjoy in their wake.  This is my favorite part of the process — nothing like a trunk full of products for charity.  Keep track of the value donated by following the Goodwill’s valuation guide and grab a receipt to file for tax deductions.

You’re probably feeling a lot lighter at this point and you’ve freed up more living space, so let’s fill it back up!  Take a minute to assess what is still left as clutter.  Realistically, there will always be things you cannot trash or donate and so they need a home.  Here is where we delegate.  Find spaces that will be responsible for items that would otherwise be clutter.  Invest in what you need, be it more bookcases, closet shelves or decorative hideaways like hollow ottomans.

If there is an opposite of a hoarder, that’s me.  With my design eye always leaning towards modern, minimalistic, clutter has absolutely zero place in my life, but I’m not perfect and I have a newborn.  Things are falling out of place at an alarming rate.  Piles of mail, paperwork, odds and ends are forming where they shouldn’t, sometimes doubling in size freakishly fast.  So I too, despite my purge-aholic nature, have some major organizing to tackle.

Sure, it is called spring cleaning, but scrubbing, scouring and defrosting is only half the battle.  Organizing is just as important to the process, and a perfect place to start. Well, get a move on!
