preparing a guestroom for overnight visitors {laminate upkeep}

When we moved into our home in January, one of the most exciting parts for me was having a guest room. My family lives across the country and many of my closest friends live out of town. I get great joy out of preparing the guest room for my overnight visitors, both in cleaning and setting out their personalized amenities tray.

What is now our guest room was the previous owner’s craft room/dog kennel. It needed an awful lot of work. Not only were the walls blah and bordered, they were punctured with millions of holes. so. much. patchwork. The worst part really, was the floors. The carpet was almost like an indoor/outdoor type, very utilitarian, and it was clear that the dog had been using the room like a personal potty. gross. So out came the carpet and in went a beautiful laminate that I couldn’t be happier with!

Laminate is so ideal for those of us with kids as it can really take a beating and not show anything. It is cost-effective yet beautiful, and it comes in just about every tone you can imagine. It is also easy to maintain and condition I’ve learned (I had no idea what to do beyond a sweeping at first). To revive my laminate floors, I’m using Pledge Multi Surface, which is pH balanced, unlike other cleaners, so you don’t have to worry about it stripping the finish. whew. It leaves my laminate refreshed, but not with a creepy film that others can leave.

Clean, shiny floors are just the start to a perfect guest room. The next crucial aspect for me is living things. I am a really slow decorator as I over-think everything when it comes to choosing colors and decor. I can’t just go to the store and furnish a whole room, I mean I could but I won’t. While I am working on finding the right pieces in the depths of my desert, I rely heavily on indoor plants like succulents, cactus and palms to bring life to my guest room.

If you are curious about my bathroom guest amenities, I mostly keep them in the bathroom basket. Go back a couple posts on the blog and you will see! The guest room I keep to: local souvenirs like postcards…

magnets and keychains… sometimes mugs or shot glasses or other tourist oddities depending on the guests coming! I also always, always leave out a notepad and pen. Guests can write out their schedules, to-do lists, phone numbers, etc.

Water is a must anywhere plus any additional beverages your guests enjoy. Sometime I put out a tea station. Seasonal fruit is a great idea for arrival, mornings and if they need something to just grab and go. Right now, I have out bananas, apples, apricots and nectarines. yum. If you are feeling like an overachiever, go ahead and bake something. I picked up these apple strudel bits from the bakery = )

Your beauty amenities will vary with guest. My girlfriend from Los Angeles is coming in this weekend so I have girlier stuff out than, if say, my brother was dropping in. Use your judgement. It is swimsuit and sandal season in the desert so I made sure to put out mani/pedi requirements!

I also put out a charcoal sponge/soap, facial wipes, ice sack (for sunburns or hangovers) facial lotion, sunscreen (!!) comb, hair ties, cold gel sleeping eye mask and assorted lip balms.

It is impossible to get a pulled back shot of the whole shebang when the backdrop is a mirror, so bear with me guys. There is my cheesy, peace-loving ombre self, but I want you to see how I laid it all out. V

Upon the renovation of the guestroom, I was struck with the desire to include a guestbook. Cheesy? I thought back to when I was a kid and every winter stayed with my family in ski chalet rentals. They ALWAYS had guestbooks and not only did I love sharing how the slopes were that day and what wildlife I encountered at the house, but it was amazing to look through and read past guests’ experiences. I’m a writer and I adore hand-written words – something so magical and so nostalgic. So, I bought a guestbook, subtly leave it on the nightstand and my amazing friends leave sweet notes!
