keeping poker night simple {Cubero Cigars}

As a wife and mother, I wear many hats.  On a good night, I’m wearing my hostess hat, catering to guests and remembering to join in on the fun as well.  Poker Night has long been a favorite of my husband and I.  I distinctly remember a time when we watched way too much World Series of Poker — total addicts.  I knew it was paying off when I totally fooled a semi-professional male player and won big.  Never underestimate the blonde chick!

My husband has a guys night every other week at least (though it tends to turn into couples night often).  For the most part they are guys who work in the industry who share a passion for craft beer, craft cocktails and luxury cigars.  They never show up empty-handed but my husband usually supplies the cigars.  He is a bit of an aficionado – a member of an exclusive cigar community called Brothers of the Leaf and attending cigar conventions like the upcoming CigarFest in PA.   He definitely knows what he is talking about and his humidor is always full.

So back to poker night.  What is it that makes a successful poker night?  A diligent and organized wife, of course.  Poker night is all about supplies so be sure to stock up on the three essentials: drinks, music and cigars.  For music I suggest subscribing to MOG … the greatest invention since the phonograph.

I tend to overdo things when it comes to get-togethers and I place the blame squarely on Pinterest… and the amazing bloggers who fuel it.  I just can’t help myself — you should have seen how crafty (and therefore girly) I made our mostly male Super Bowl Party with football-shaped brownies, a yellow streamer goal post, penalty flags and lots of printables.  Poker Night is not such an occasion.  I keep it simple.  Drinks will be bourbon, neat, and craft beers will be cold and aplenty.

As our guests arrive, the first thing we hand them (and ourselves) is a glass of bourbon and a Cubero Cigar. I like to pick up a few packs of Cubero Cigars at Walmart, a short smoke, perfect for a few games of poker.  Welcome to the Husvar house!

It is so nice out still here in the desert, yet the heat is really creeping in.  Our days are lingering in the 90’s, easing us in to the 100’s that are about to stay.  Soon our days will not dip below the 110s and we will be living in pools or indoors huddled next to the AC vents.  Fortunately, we are still living in paradise and our parties are granted much outdoor time… perfect for lighting up a cigar.

Eventually everyone’s mind was on poker so we all scurried indoors to enjoy the thrill of gambling on a school night.  Me and the husband squared off — hard to keep your poker face after a decade of looking at each other.  He knows all of my tells!!

At my closest Walmart I found Cubero in three different blends, each with a distinct flavor and aroma.  Hints such as mint, grape and chocolate set each apart from the other.  I particularly enjoy the size as my husbands cigars are typically large and last forever — he’s a fan of the giant 60 ring 6 inch gordos.  Cuberos are great for any cigar enthusiast, man or woman, and they don’t take 2 hours to smoke.

 My best advice for planning a perfect poker night?

Keep it simple — don’t look at Pinterest — keep the bourbon flowing and the cigars lit.

    Cigerettes are a big no-no in my home but I don’t mind the cigars on guys night and have even indulged in one myself.

    We do not smoke but my husband on very few occasions has smoked a cigar with his friends but that has been years.

    Sounds like an enjoyable evening. I think men need to do more things like this with their pals. Love your pictures included in this post.

    My husband loves these. I might have to surprise him for his birthday with a “guys poker night”
