Ride the Bar {Piggyback Rider}

I have sad news. My 4 year old is a big boy. He has been over 40 lbs for the past year now, 46 to be exact(I know, he’s basically a moose. Tall, skinny, and sturdy) and I have been lamenting over the fact that he’s too big for the stroller let alone ANY kind of carrier. Here’s the problem: there are so many times when we go places that he does not want to walk, but he is just WAY too heavy for the double stroller and it becomes a beast to maneuver! With the way baby products are these days, lovely things like the little kick-boards for the older kids on the back of the strollers are available. This last year at our HUGE local pumpkin patch/corn maze, I just about cried trying to push my stroller through the gravel. It was hot, I was exhausted and needless to say, we cut the trip rather short.  Then we come to more active activities, such as hiking. When the little ones slow down, it can be a grueling hike for all involved with lots of stopping time. I have wished for so long that there was some type of carrier for kids that were out of that toddler phase. When I discovered the Piggyback Rider, I just about jumped for joy!

The Piggyback Rider is a mutually enjoyable, effortless way to carry a child (2½ – 7 years) on your back, replacing bulky backpack carriers and strollers. It functions like a backpack, utilizing a shoulder-mounted foot-bar to distribute the child’s weight (up to 60 lbs.) at your core, which enables a natural upright walking posture. The child stands firmly on the wide foot-bar, holding integrated grab handles and secured by a safety tether.”

When I first found this product, my first thought was about safety. What happens if they slip off the bar? Is this a safe product? Lucky for us, the first time we hoisted Kade up, he decided to act silly and slipped off the bar. The tether attaching him to my husband caught him and he dangled there happily on my husband’s back, laughing until he found his footing on the bar. Kade loved being up high and able to see the way his daddy does, without being locked in and restricted like a baby carrier. It’s such a fun bonding experience for him also to be close to us and talk about the things he’s seeing.

I was also concerned about comfort. My husband has a ongoing knee injury, but the moment he put the Piggyback Rider on and hoisted my son up, they were out the door and down to the park. When they returned, he commented on how he barely even felt like Kade was on his back. I switched the carrier onto myself and had the same experience. It’s such a  comfortable carrier and so lightweight and easy to set up, it really is an inspired product.
