handcrafted items from India {MyMela}

MyMela is a pathway directly to Indian Mela. This online market carries handcrafted artwork and tells you about the artisans who created them. By purchasing items from this site, you allow them the opportunity to live by providing an income for them and they can continue to make and sell their amazingly beautiful crafts while practicing their traditions.

I absolutely adore their Cushion Covers. The Surya Pale Green pillow is 16×16 and made of raw silk and cotton. If you look closely at the stitching, you’ll see the small grain-like ‘dana’ stitches with mirrors sewn inside of them. This gorgeous pillow of the rising sun is created on a ‘pakko’-embroidered cover. This pillow is absolutely breathtaking. I brought the pillows over to my parents house on Father’s day and everyone was gawking over these pillows. There are absolutely zero imperfections. They absolutely catch your eye and bring that pop to every room as an accent.

The orange pillow is called Checkmate Rust. This is made in the ahir style of embroidery, where the outlines of the design are done in a labor intensive chain stitch called sankali. The reasoning for creating this chain stitch is to give the pattern a uniform appearance. Just like the green pillow, this is created on raw silk and cotton with mirror-work also embroidered into the embroidery, which you can see in the photos.

You’ll love looking through all of the gorgeous pillow covers. You’ll find mirror-work, embroidery and a variety of vibrant colors. If you would like to read more about the women artisans of Shrujan who create these works of art, please click here.

Please help support the traditions and hand crafted creations made by these women. Head over to MyMela to look through all of their items. They have jewelry, bed spreads, pillow covers, place mats, and a variety of home decor items. You’ll be impressed with all of the handcrafted items that they carry.
