learning apps for stormy winter days {Disney}

This time of year kids can often become trapped indoors due to the weather, be it snow or rain.  Here in Palm Springs it has been dumping snow on the mountains and we’ve taken every opportunity to partake in snowball fights and snow angels, but my gosh, the rain here in the valley has been monsoon style.

My oldest kiddo, almost 8, is a self-proclaimed “desert rat” used to 120 degree summers and her sledding usually involves sand dunes, not snow piles.  So when that glorious time of winter comes to town, she’s all in.

She loves it so much, she can create hearts made of snow!  Okay, it was totally random, but I’m super happy I had the camera out when it happened.

We broke out the tent and went camping for some much needed rest and relaxation during this crazy hectic season.  And while the afternoon weather was a perfect high 20’s with a warm sun and lots of snow most of the time, it did rain – driving us into the tent for refuge.

One can only play a certain amount of solitaire before the iPad comes out… and so it did.  It seemed like the perfect opportunity to play a new learning app I downloaded (for free) Mickey’s Magical Math World, part of a new learning brand created for 3-8 year olds that harnesses the power of imagination and creativity to learn.  Most importantly, it’s Disney.

Math + Disney = magic

We embrace technology in this family. I mean we love to get outside as well as you can see, but any tools to keep my daughter learning and I want it.  Within Mickey’s Magical Math World kids will learn and practice fundamental math skills like shapes, sorting, problem solving, count along and addition/subtraction.  My 7, almost 8 year old is on the higher end of the spectrum for this app so she wasn’t challenged, but it was still great exercise for the brain.  I could see this app being a great warm-up before math homework!

The long-loved Disney Characters (Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy) keep kids sucked into the app, which is brilliance.  The animations are undeniably adorable and kids just want to see what happens next, learning along the way.  It will be really amazing for my 2 year old as he gets older so I definitely will be keeping this one and the others in a folder for him!

To go along with the app is the Disney Imagicademy for parents that answers the question “what can I do today to help my child grow?” with articles, games, crafts, activities and tips.  This is a great resource for involved parents who want to keep their kids challenged, because coming up with new ideas can become difficult after awhile!  Within this app parents can also keep tabs on their kids’ progress and success in the Math World app and offer up virtual high fives.

Disney Imagicademy apps are available exclusively for iPad and can currently be found on Apple’s App Store in the Kids, Education and Entertainment categories.

    I have to fight to keep them inside. My kids all think (even the grown ones if they’re home visiting) that snowstorms are for playtime!

    Hi there excellent blog! Does running a blog such as this take a large amount of work? I have absolutely no understanding of coding but I was hoping to start my own blog soon. Anyways, if you have any ideas or tips for new blog owners please share. I know this is off subject however I simply had to ask. Thanks a lot!

    Undeniably believe that which you stated. Your favorite justification seemed to be on the internet the easiest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed while people consider worries that they just don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing without having side effect , people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
