learn something new {Get to Know Your Kid} + Giveaway

Think you know your kid? Well, yeah, okay, I’m sure you do; but when it comes to their inner workings and thought processes, I’d bet good money they will astound you…. mine do everyday.  Get to Know Your Kid by Shana Connell Noyes provides an insightful window into your child’s feelings, hopes, opinions, and dreams.  The questions in this journal provide excellent material for you and your child to ponder how he or she feels about a myriad of topics, including self identity, family, friends, and so much more. Not only is this is a great launching pad for important parent/ child conversation, but it is also a great bonding experience!

Having two daughters aged three and five, I am always aware of their cognitive differences and seek out activities that both will enjoy and understand. The beauty of this journal is that the questions are specific enough to be easily understood, but at the same time, vague enough to be open for interpretation. There is also plenty of space on each page for their answers.   I plan to revisit the books with my girls every so often so that they can add to their entries; I’m excited to see how their responses change over time!
Some of my favorites:

“Do you know what I do all day while you’re at school? Do you think it’s harder to have a job or go to school? Why?”

“Do you think animals have emotions like we do? Why or Why not? What about fish and insects?”

“What is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you? What’s the nicest thing you’ve ever done for somebody else?”

See what I mean? These are excellent conversation starters for subjects like feelings, charity, doing the right thing…. the list goes on.  I don’t know about you, but I LOVE reading things I wrote as a child. What a great keepsake for your little boy or girl.   The cover can be personalized with the child’s name and there are also some spaces for drawing pictures such as “yourself all grown up”.  Pretty darn cute.  The illustrations throughout add a touch of whimsy that will hold captivate your child.  Published in March by Stewart, Tabori & Chang, an imprint of Abrams, Get to Know Your Kid will provide food for thought for both you and your child and may vastly expand your understanding of one another.  Who knows, you may learn something new.
