‘I love you’ touches from late talkers {toddlertown}

I used JOHNSON’S® for my little one and for myself as part of a sponsored post for Socialstars #johnsonspartners #SoMuchMore

My son will be 28 months soon and still says very few words.  It is beyond frustrating for both sides, toddler and parent, but I have been assured everything is fine, he is just slow to speak.  It is something I worry about everyday though, especially since he has had multiple cleft lip surgeries in his young life.  I fill with joy when he says something new, appreciating every sound he repeats, every utterance that resembles English.  Most days, his communication is like that of a caveman, pointing and yelling “OOOOOO” at what he wants.  I don’t get “I love you” yet, even rarely a “mom”… but I know he loves me with all of his being and tells me through other ways.

Babies and toddlers tell us they love us in their faces with big smiles and bright eyes.  Just the look on my son’s face when he sees me first in the morning or when I come home… it makes me melt! Gabriel is very attached to me, especially as of the past few months and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love his momma’s boy tendencies.  He loves to cling to me and fiddle with my jewelry, which seems to calm and pacify him.

We went to the zoo yesterday just to have a relaxing afternoon outdoors.  Well, both kids ended up in the goat-petting exhibit, which I now regret.  I’m not 100% that is the reason, but Gabriel came into my bedroom this morning to cuddle up.  After a moment, he turned and looked at me with the saddest little face – out spewed throw up.  That continued for awhile.  Sick kids are no fun but if there has to be an upside, it is all of the cuddles.  As I type, Gabriel is stroking my arm absentmindedly, pulling me down to hug him every so often.  It is these moments that return toddlers to babies <3 and my heart doubles in size.

Sure, it isn’t always gentle hugs and hand holding (my favorite: the sweet back pats) – no, sometimes it is the goofy touches that say “I love you”.  My son loves to poke my eyeballs, pull on my eyelashes and pinch my cheeks (hard!) but I love all attention he gives me.  These are the ways my son is currently able to express his affection for me and I’ll treasure it all.

Touch is so important during the first couple of years when your kids cannot express themselves well in words.  Their body language is how you decipher their needs, wants and thoughts.  In my situation with a toddler who isn’t talking yet, touch is everything. This year, I have been talking about the #SoMuchMore campaign and how important bath time is and the subsequent lotion massage, for bonding, relaxation and comfort.  JOHNSON’S® products have been a crucial part of this and today I wanted to point out a few great products available like the JOHNSON’S® Baby Moisture Wash with Vanilla Oatmeal and JOHNSON’S® Baby Moisture Lotion with Vanilla Oatmeal.  These have been perking up our bath time routine with a beautiful scent and luxurious skin-softening abilities… it must be the oatmeal, which I often add to baths to soothe and soften skin!

I tend to borrow my son’s JOHNSON’S® products to use on my own skin, especially the lotions.  I have “hyper-sensitive skin” per my dermatologist, so gentle baby lotions are often best for me.  I’m packing for a weekend Vegas vacation with the kids right now (yes, great timing for a sick kid!!) and I grabbed Gabriel’s JOHNSON’S® Baby Oil Gel with Shea & Cocoa Butter to throw into my pool bag.

You can find me this weekend out by the pool in Vegas – follow me on Instagram for photos – and to ensure I have the softest, most moisturized skin possible (with no irritations) I’m using the JOHNSON’S® Baby Oil Gel with Shea & Cocoa Butter.  I was applying it to Gabriel this morning and it left behind such wonderful softness, I had to snake it for myself!  For swimsuit-ready skin, I suggest picking up a bottle for yourself!
