how to free yourself from the scale number + Murray Canyon Trail

Before this week, I can’t remember when I last weighed myself. My weight doesn’t fluctuate much, but even if it did, I wouldn’t need a scale to tell me I weighed more than before. People can often focus too much on that one solitary number, like it defines them and their health. Well, I’m here to tell you – your health is MUCH more than a number. Our bodies are complicated and our physical weight is made up of more than fat.

It’s not the pounds, it’s what they are made of.

So if you’re working your butt off at the gym but the number isn’t moving, don’t worry – but you need this scale.

While I’m not fixated on my weight, I’m a nutrition and exercise nerd. I am absolutely obsessed with figuring out my body – what it needs, what will make it work better and what it’s made up of. So when the Nokia Body+ scale arrived on my doorstep, I geeked out. This incredible smart scale shows the WHOLE picture.

how to free yourself from the scale number

upgrade your scale

Staying in the know about your health is important, and yes, that includes knowing your overall weight. More importantly though, you need to know what those lbs are made of. With the Nokia Body+ scale, you can check your (high-accuracy) weight and full body composition every day. Now you can find out what your lbs are made of from the privacy of your own home. Find out your muscle mass, body fat percentage, water percentage and so much more than a regular old scale.

quit the gym

Joking, kind of. If you love the gym, stay with it, but for everyone else (including myself) know that the gym isn’t a requirement. Often times, the gym is all about numbers – how far you can run, how much weight you can lift and there is always a scale. There is also the social pressure and judgment that can be a deterrent for some. Instead of trying to carve out time to make it to the gym, create your own simple home gym or try online fitness programs or make fitness a lifestyle. While I do love my Beachbody OnDemand programs, fitness is a lifestyle for me. I choose to be active with my family and not just on the weekends. Every day we either hike or bike and I squeeze in other activities when the opportunity arises. When your body stays in motion, you need to focus less on that singular number on the scale.

know yourself

Pay attention to your body. This past year, I focused on listening to what my body was saying. I paid attention to foods that aggravated me and cut them out. I stopped certain high intensity workouts that were making my knees sore. Your body is talking to you – are you listening? If you are really dialed into your health, feeling great and looking fab, your overall weight won’t matter.

track your success

Rather than focusing on your weight (especially in a negative way) refocus your thinking to tracking your successes. You will need the right tools to help you with this, like a smart scale that tracks your numbers in a phone app. I’ve said it before, but I’m saying it again, the Nokia Body+ scale is the tool you need to focus on what matters. When you step onto this scale you automatically sync with the free Nokia Health Mate app on your phone. This app keeps track of your progress, offers insights and lets you set weight loss goals.

This sleek scale not only looks fab, but will bring your health knowledge to a new level. High-accuracy weight and full body composition are just the beginning; you can even keep track of your nutrition within the app. The scale

Murray Canyon Trail/Seven Sisters Trail

So, one of my goals (you could call it a resolution) this year is to get on a trail once a week with the kids. Twice if I can. So far, so good. It is an easy way for me to combine family time with exercise – multi-tasking at its finest. It also gives me a chance to reboot and recharge as only nature can do for me. I track my steps now with the Nokia Health Mate app on my phone (well it’s actually through Samsung Health) so an extra 4 miles always boosts my count. The Health Mate app pairs with over 100 health and fitness apps (!!!) so you can monitor just about everything related to your health in one spot. So Cool.

It’s no wonder I love the Indian Canyons in Palm Springs. If you are visiting the area, I strongly recommend it checking out, even if you don’t want to hike. There are plenty of picnic tables right at the trail heads. Indian Canyons is a natural oasis, full of rushing streams and giant palms.  It is the ancestral home of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and it isn’t hard to see why the area natives chose this spot to thrive for thousands of years.

Murray Canyon Trail to Seven Sisters Falls is a 4 mile out and back trail.  Great for all skill levels, this trail is really fun for kids. It is a good distance, so a nice workout, but not a lot of elevation gain, so easy to accomplish. Along the trail, you will pass over the rushing stream many times. This can most always be achieved while staying dry, but I’d recommend water shoes, especially for kids. It is one of the only places in the Coachella Valley that your kids can try and catch frogs, which is a highlight for my desert-dwelling kids.

Did I mention that you can have up to 8 different profiles on the Health Mate app? Create profiles for your entire family, including the kids to keep a close watch on the health of those you love the most. I’ve ALWAYS wanted a scale like this to track my kids’ weight/body composition and now I have it. It is incredible and it is a smart scale, so the kids naturally love using it.

Okay, I’m done gushing about the Nokia Body+ scale. You need one, you want one and HERE is where you can get one.
