Before this week, I can’t remember when I last weighed myself. My weight doesn’t fluctuate much, but even if it did, I wouldn’t need a scale to tell me I weighed more than before. People can often focus too much on that one solitary number, like it defines them and their health. Well, I’m here to tell you – your health is MUCH more than a number. Our bodies are complicated and our physical weight is made up of more than fat.
It’s not the pounds, it’s what they are made of.

Every day we either hike or bike and I squeeze in other activities when the opportunity arises. When your body stays in motion, you need to focus less on that singular number on the scale.
Pay attention to your body. This past year, I focused on listening to what my body was saying. I paid attention to foods that aggravated me and cut them out. I stopped certain high intensity workouts that were making my knees sore. Your body is talking to you – are you listening? If you are really dialed into your health, feeling great and looking fab, your overall weight won’t matter.

Rather than focusing on your weight (especially in a negative way) refocus your thinking to tracking your successes. Murray Canyon Trail/Seven Sisters Trail
So, one of my goals (you could call it a resolution) this year is to get on a trail once a week with the kids. Twice if I can. So far, so good. It is an easy way for me to combine family time with exercise – multi-tasking at its finest. It also gives me a chance to reboot and recharge as only nature can do for me. I track my steps now with the Nokia Health Mate app on my phone (well it’s actually through Samsung Health) so an extra 4 miles always boosts my count. It’s no wonder I love the Indian Canyons in Palm Springs. If you are visiting the area, I strongly recommend it checking out, even if you don’t want to hike. There are plenty of picnic tables right at the trail heads. Indian Canyons is a natural oasis, full of rushing streams and giant palms. It is the ancestral home of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and it isn’t hard to see why the area natives chose this spot to thrive for thousands of years.
Murray Canyon Trail to Seven Sisters Falls is a 4 mile out and back trail. Great for all skill levels, this trail is really fun for kids. It is a good distance, so a nice workout, but not a lot of elevation gain, so easy to accomplish. Along the trail, you will pass over the rushing stream many times. This can most always be achieved while staying dry, but I’d recommend water shoes, especially for kids. It is one of the only places in the Coachella Valley that your kids can try and catch frogs, which is a highlight for my desert-dwelling kids.
