watermelon ginger agua fresca

I’m sharing this watermelon ginger agua fresca recipe for hiking hydration and #Advil in my life as part of an Advil® sponsored series for Socialstars™  #FastAdvilFanatics

One thing about summer here in Palm Springs is that it can put a real cramp in your hiking style.  I mean cramp literally because dehydration happens quickly in the desert.  Dehydration not only leads to cramps but also headaches, neither of which I want to deal with when I’m trying to enjoy the outdoors.  In the summer, I step up my hydration game with Watermelon Ginger Agua Fresca + bring back up relief like Advil.

Dehydration is a major cause of headaches.  I know whenever I have a headache, a few tall glasses of water usually does the trick.  Remembering to drink enough water throughout the day can be tough, though!  Something that helps me is to infuse my water with fruits and herbs.  This is common knowledge but if it tastes good, you’re more likely to drink more.

When I’m out hiking in the desert sun, I don’t need a reminder to drink water, but I do need an extra infusion of minerals and vitamins.  Watermelon is one of the best fruits to rehydrate with as it is 92% water.  It also contains essential minerals like magnesium that prevent headaches.  Naturally, it is the perfect fruit to infuse your hiking water with.  You could drop it right into your water, or blend it into a refreshing agua fresca, which gives the bonus cooling effect.

Once a headache strikes, ginger can be a very good friend.  As a natural anti-inflammatory, it can help to relieve headaches while also soothing nausea that headaches can bring on.  Luckily, watermelon and ginger go quite nicely together.  Add in some lime and a bit of sugar and you are good to go!  Low blood sugar can trigger headaches as well, so adding in some sugar while hiking (and sweating) can be very beneficial.  I like to add my sugar in the form of raw honey, which we all know has a ton of health benefits on its own.

There are certain things I always take hiking with me and Advil is one.  Having a headache while out on the trail is just awful.  Even staying hydrated and healthy, headaches can strike and where worse than out in the blazing sun, so far away from your dark, cool bedroom?!  Other aches and pains can occur on your happy trail as well, but Advil has you covered.  Just 1-2 every 4-6 hours during pain and you’re set!

June is National Headache Month – how do you battle your headaches?  Do you know what even triggers your headaches?  Finding out the cause is always the best medicine, be it dehydration, stress or even your diet.  Don’t let pain get in the way of your passions – keep Advil in your bag when on the go!
