Heart Rock Trail in Crestline, CA + a customized granola
As a homeschool mom, one of my top priorities is getting the kids outside to exercise and explore. We’ve gotta get those PE credits from somewhere! It doesn’t hurt that I’m a nature lover and basically only happy when outdoors, of course. We are lucky to live in Southern California where so many different ecosystems are at our fingertips… so many trails and new sights to see. I have a favorite trail in the San Bernardino National Forest, but I’ve been waiting for the weather to cool and the fall leaves to turn before we headed up. Boy were we rewarded for our patience!
Heart Rock Trail is a short (1.7 mile) but sweet hike that is perfect for families. Located in Crestline, CA it is right near Lake Gregory and also close to Lake Arrowhead. It is an easy hike but definitely will give kids a good burn and get the heart pumping. The trail’s namesake and destination is the natural heart formation in the rock – so cool, right?
…but there is much more to see along this trail, especially in the fall. Now in late October, the leaves have already turned and cover the forest floor, as well as the slow moving creeks. The air is gusty and with that flies the yellow, green and brown falling leaves. It is magical and we stayed for an extra hour just climbing rocks and chasing frogs through the water!
Being the tree-hugger that I am, I also consider myself a bit of a granola expert. Hiking and granola are soul mates, right? So when I heard I could customize my own granola with Bear Naked Custom, I was all about it.
With Bear Naked Custom, you can create your own custom granola blend with over 50 different chef-inspired ingredients. The combination possibilities are endless. Think beyond just almonds and dried cranberries… like really far beyond. Let’s start with the custom blend I chose with my husband in mind. His blend begins with honey granola and it flavored with freeze-dried cinnamon apples, sweet bacon sprinkles and bourbon flavor! Sounds delicious, right? The bourbon (contains no alcohol) and bacon flavors give such a wonderful smokiness to this otherwise sweet granola.
For Gabriel, I began with a cacao + cashew butter granola (yum) and added cashews, dried cranberries and toasted organic coconut chips. He is a picky eater (like ridiculously picky) but he couldn’t stop eating his blend. I swear a third of the huge canister was gone before we even arrived at the trailhead!
You may have noticed another unique bit about Bear Naked Custom. When you create your custom blend, you can also customize the label by Bearifying yourself! Can you imagine a kid’s face when they see themselves Bearified on their very own canister of granola? Hysterical.
For Savannah, I started with the honey granola and then added freeze-dried pineapple chunks, sweet ginger organic coconut chips and toasted sesame seeds. This blend is my personal favorite. The three additions make for a well balanced blend of sweet, nutty and spicy.
Of course, her Bearified granola was a hit and she particularly loved the addition of a unicorn horn!
