final days of summer: mother-daughter Netflix Nights
With my oldest entering middle school in a week, I’m painfully aware that my first baby is growing up, like super fast. I’m also painfully aware that summer is coming to an end and soon our schedules will be jam-packed. School work, cheer practices, field trips and ninja training will soon fill our days. We’re savoring these final free-to-be-me days with last minute plans and lazy, lounging Netflix Nights. We are gearing up for the return of one of our favorite shows, Spirit Riding Free, returning on August 17th! See how we make Netflix Nights memorable at our house:
mother-daughter Netflix Nights essentials
Couches, beds, floor cushions: these are all fair game for Netflix Nights. It’s still raging hot here in the desert, so we usually pick whichever room is coolest, pack it full of pillows, cushions and poufs and hit play. Netflix Nights are also all about comfortable loungewear, nothing fancy allowed!
No Netflix Night is ready to begin without an array of snacks. We’re talking about moms and their tween girls today so I’m sharing our personal favorites – a more sophisticated snack tray of macarons, pirouettes, mango licorice and (duh) plenty of popcorn! Fizzy waters and sodas are also a must.
a popcorn mix
Netflix Night needs a starring snack attraction. We eat a lot of popcorn in this house and always like to mix it up. I often make popcorn balls and popcorn mixes for our movie and Netflix nights because, let’s face it, they are easy to make! One of our favorites is Cashew Butter Coconut Popcorn. This is simply freshly popped popcorn tossed with four flavorful ingredients and a sprinkling of toasted coconut flakes. It is nutty, sweet, salty and perfect for any Netflix Night with the kids. Recipe below!
a fun vibe and full attention
It is so hard for me to unplug and just be in the moment when we are at home. I admit it. We adventure and camp outdoors often, where I can so easily let go of work and internet life, but at home… :/ it is a struggle. Maybe it is because I work from home or maybe it is just a struggle for all moms in 2018. SO many emails to answer, texts to respond to, bills to pay, deadlines to meet… and this is why I love the structure of “Netflix Night” or “game night” or anything that is scheduled. It feels easier to let go of adult life and just be mom when there is a solid plan.
So let those fancy pillows fly!
Do you guys love Spirit Riding Free on Netflix? Savannah and I watch it together so we’re excited for new season 6 to be released on August 17th. I foresee a few binge sessions in our near future. If you’re not familiar with the show, it is set during the 19th century in the small town of Miradero, Texas. 12 year old, Lucky, encounters a wild kiger mustang named Spirit. Naturally, they bond and together (along with Lucky’s friends and their horses) they embark on all kinds of fun adventures across the land.
It is a really wonderful, wholesome and adorable show that is great for young girls. Lucky is a positive role model as she is courageous and kind while staying true to herself. She’s a free “spirit” if you will… Overall, your kiddos will get a lot of positive messages from the show – so catch up on past seasons fast.
