eliminate toxins from our homes with {Seventh Generation}

I participated in this program on behalf of Seventh Generation and The Motherhood. All opinions are my own.

Toxins.  They are everywhere, hiding in the most innocent of places.  It seems like every week I am throwing away products or taking new precautions, especially when it comes to my kids. I think back to my college days, aka the days I really didn’t care what kind of toxins were in my makeup, my food or (especially) my cleaning products. After personally housing two children for 9 months a piece, though, things have changed. When you are making so many decisions for others, you need to really research and think about those choices.  My babies count on me to keep them safe and healthy, a duty I take very seriously.

this guy is counting on me…

My family tries to be as conscious as we can, for the good of the Earth, for the good of the family and for the good of our community.  We can only be as good as how well informed we are though, so I love to meet with companies like Seventh Generation to learn more.  I was invited to join in on a webinar conversation with them about chemical exposure in everyday products, and I was all ears.  Let me share what I learned with you guys:

Right now:  Eliminate known toxins from your house and take precautions with the rest — assume guilty until proven innocent.  Pay attention to high contact areas for kids: countertops, high chairs, places where babies lick and eat from — keep the cleaners on these areas super safe.

5 Easy Steps you can take:

1.     Take off your shoes at the door: 85 percent of the dirt in our homes is tracked inside on the bottom of our shoes. It’s not just dirt, but toxins like lead, pesticides, gasoline residue and more. Keep your home safer by taking off your shoes. It’s the public health equivalent of washing your hands.

2.     Buy safer body care: Children are exposed to an average of 27 care product ingredients on a daily  basis that have not been found safe for developing bodies. Protect your family’s health by avoiding products that ingredients like parabens, synthetic fragrances, triclosan and more.

3.     Open a window: People spend about 90 percent of their time inside, but indoor air is typically far more polluted than outside. So, open those windows!

4.     Eat more whole foods: Processed foods may be convenient, but they’re also loaded with sweeteners, artificial flavors and colorings, and synthetic preservatives. These lack nutrients and many are also linked to health issues like ADHD and even cancer.

5.     Ban the can: Bisphenol-A (BPA), a hormone disruptor that has been linked to everything from obesity to cancer, is in the plastic resin that lines most canned goods—from soups to sodas.
