early morning shortcuts for moms
Let me start by saying I am not a morning person. I don’t enjoy being up with the birds and would much rather hit snooze 7-8 times before opening my eyes. I should have considered that before having kids because once they enter the picture, you have no choice but to be a morning person. My daughter is a “sun’s up, I’m up” type of gal and the 3 year old, well, he is 3 so enough said. In recent years, I have been trying to make peace with the morning and have had some success.
The trick to having a happier morning is preparing the night before. Prepare your breakfast, which could be freezing a batch of breakfast burritos or setting up a slow cooker of overnight oats. Overnight oats tend to be a favorite in my house since all kids and adults like it (plus, super healthy and a great way to start the day). This also goes for having the kids’ school lunches ready to go.
Another way to plan the night before is to plan your outfits. I won’t know what I want to wear until the day begins, so how I do it is set out 5 outfits, separate from the rest of my wardrobe, for the work week. Every Sunday, I pull out 5 tops + bottoms and put them on an empty rack space in my closet. Now I can just stumble in, bleary-eyed, and pull on an outfit from my pre-selected options. Now, my only concern is putting something on backwards.
Invest in great skin color correcting concealers. Putting on a full face of makeup in the early A.M. is often not an option, and by often I mean never. You also don’t want to show up to drop off looking like a zombie, so find a really fabulous color corrector. The best color for fixing your sleepless dark circles is yellow! My early morning makeup routine is: concealer, foundation stick, matte powder, blush, lip gloss – mascara if I’m feeling up to it. On really bad days, I just grab the color correcting concealer and head out the door.
When it comes to hair, I am all about dry shampoo. By the end of the week, my hair is 90% dry shampoo. Joking, kind of. Morning showers can be hard to come by when you have kids to get ready. Absorb your natural oils that developed overnight by applying dry shampoo. If it is still looking a bit wild, no worries, top knots are totally in.
I don’t need a whole lot in the morning, but I do need caffeine and fast. I gave up on brewing a full pot in the morning a long time ago. Back when I only had one (very well behaved) child, I used a coffeemaker that first ground full beans and then brewed a full pot of coffee. How luxurious my life was then!
My morning caffeine routine is maybe more complicated than some. I drink both coffee and green tea. I cannot function without either, so I drink both (separately of course). The easiest way for me to get both is to heat a kettle of water on the stove for both my green tea and my coffee. This only works with instant coffee.
I always keep instant coffee around for two reasons: mornings and camping. I don’t always use instant coffee, but weekday mornings? Forget about it. In the morning, I only need a single cup and I need it fast. Folgers instant coffee is the answer for moms who need a quick caffeine fix.
Note, the second reason I keep Instant coffee around is camping. We are an outdoors-loving family and any spare moment we have, we head outside. If it was up to me, we’d probably all live in a tent half the year. Life is really busy right now though with work and school, so when we actually get a day or two off to go camping, we jump at it. Next up is a camping trip to Joshua Tree (a favorite) at Jumbo Rocks campground. I’ll be taking Folgers Instant Coffee with us for our caffeine fix, for sure. I’ll be sharing a yummy campground coffee recipe on the blog, sometime in early May! For more Folgers Instant Coffee right now, check out these Folgers Recipes.
