Today we are thinking outside the Easter basket!  Every Easter since my daughter was born 8 years ago, she has had a different Easter basket.  It never started out as an on-purpose tradition, but has indeed become one.  When she was younger my frustration was that conventional Easter baskets were too small.  I don’t focus much on candy during the holidays, though I do include some of course, but I like to give gifts and sometimes they are big in size.  I want everything to fit in the basket!!  Well, I found traditional baskets very limiting and also, my personal design style changes over the years… enter the DIY baskets.

We just purchased a new home in January and outside there was this gorgeous vintage galvanized tub.  I have a love for old things with patina so when I saw the tub I was enamored.  At that current moment it was full of dirt, rocks and cloth flowers, yes, cloth flowers.  They had been baking in the Palm Springs sun for years.  When I touched them, they turned to dust!  Long story shortish, we emptied the bucket and decided to plant real plants inside.  I was inspired by this tub and decided to distress a new galvanized bucket for my kids’ Easter baskets this year!

Let’s get started with our DIY project! First, here is what you need:

  • toilet bowl cleaner (recommend ZEP )
  • steel wool
  • outdoors area
  • rubber gloves
  • hose
  • bandana or mask

I cannot stress to you guys the importance of wearing protective gloves and mask for this project.  The ZEP Acidic Toilet Bowl Cleanser is the best to get the job done the quickest, but isn’t meant for skin contact.  Put your gloves on first.  Also put on a mask or tie a banana around your face like I did, just in case.  It can get a bit fumy, so definitely do this project outside!

So I started with this super shiny bucket, found in Walmart in the pet food area.  Functional yet so very **new** looking and very ho hum.  I wanted to get some serious aging on this guy and fast!

The process is quite simple!

  1. First, place your galvanized bucket into a big storage tub.
  2. Squirt it down with toilet bowl cleaner (I recommend ZEP), use a lot.  With steel wool, scrub down the bucket in all different directions.
  3. Allow to sit for min 30 minutes but I went more like an hour.
  4. In my experience, the galvanized bucket whitens first and you can stop there, or let it sit longer (even repeat the process over) and it was darken and corrode.  I like it all crusty… rusty gold as the American Pickers say!
  5. Turn on your hose and spray it down thoroughly, collecting the chemical water in the tub.  Don’t dump this water in your yard.  Dispose of it through your septic system please.
  6. For more aging, leave out in the sun, leave out in the rain, etc.  Every piece will turn out differently and that is what makes them beautiful!

So this year I have a son in the mix, who is finally excited about holiday traditions.  He currently loves everything that is “boy” especially Star Wars.  I’m pretty sure his dad has something to do with that.  I think the Star Wars theme goes beautifully with the distressed metal of these buckets, so I headed to Walmart to find all of the Easter goodies I could… all Star Wars, of course!

I raided the Easter section where you can find Yoda Easter Baskets and other Star Wars themed things like these awesome eggs filled with temporary tattoos! The whole section is choc full of other Disney themed baskets, toys and candy items, perfect for your Disney-loving kid.

I then raided the toy section and the apparel, hunting for anything Star Wars and came across some really great items my son will absolutely love!  Toss in a bit of candy, some bubbles and we are good to go!

I came home from Walmart and exclaimed to my husband, “look at this super cute Luke DOLL I found for Gabriel!”  He narrowed his eyes and said, “that is not a doll” okay well he is the same size as Ken, so in my eyes he certainly is a doll!  boys.

I also grabbed a Darth Vader tee, LEGO Star Wars kits and a set of little Star Wars Command figures.  My son absolutely loves to play with these and there are several kits to choose from at Walmart!

After Easter is over, don’t pack away your bucket for next year, re-purpose it!  They make gorgeous planters but also work well for storage in any room.  I stuck an Elephant Bush in mine to try it out… thinking this is going to be the bucket’s fate post-Easter!  Happy distressing!
