trekking with tots {Deuter Kid Comfort III Child Carrier}

With companies like Deuter, there is zero reason to not remain active with babies in the home.  Keep your family exploring the great outdoors while safely toting a tot with the Kid Comfort Child Carriers by Deuter.

With mountains all around us and plenty of popular trails, we are out hiking almost every week.  And while our 6 year old can keep up with us (even zoom past) the new babe not so much.  When they are very small, a wrap or simple carrier gets the job done, but once they can sit up and see the world, the Deuter carriers cannot be beat.

I don’t have any plans for slowing down so as the months started to tick by with our newborn, I started to really research the more structured carriers available.  I kept coming back to Deuter for several reasons: the styling and the reviews.  Deuter owners rave about these carriers and now I can see why.

The Deuter Kid Comfort III Carrier is designed to provide parents a comfortable way to tote around a baby-toddler, as well as some gear.  The structure distributes the weight of the load well as to not completely kill your back, and this is why you must invest in this carrier.  Even an average hike will cause you to suffer under the burden if you are using a lesser product.  I couldn’t believe how lightweight this carrier felt packed to the gills and with our neighboring 1 year old inside.  The shoulder straps are wide and cushy, and in combination with the sternum strap and padded hipbelt, the pack is super light and comfortable, even for me.  I’m a fit 5’7 but have a small frame that doesn’t allow me to usually wear carriers such as these without major back pain.  I can really tell you, no soreness developed post-hike with this pack.

Your comfort is key but baby’s is even more important.  I still can’t get over what a great spot baby has to ride around in.  The seat features a 5 point harness for ultimate safety, a high-back headrest and a thick chin pad (washable).  There is also an integrated sunroof/raincover so that mild elements won’t keep you indoors.  Baby’s space is like a plush cockpit — I want to get in there.

Storage is really important here because you wouldn’t be able to carry another sack.  Good thing there is plenty of space for the whole family!  Babies require so much but the main compartment adequately holds bulky cloth diapers, snacks, a change of clothes and any other details they may need.  There is also room for adult things.  I don’t hike with much other than my phone, the car keys and some water, so I was good to go.  There is a large zippered main compartment, two medium pockets (one zippered) and then mesh pockets around “the cockpit”.  I’m loving the mesh areas as those are perfect for things your rider will want like snacks.

The Kid Comfort III Child Carrier is the top of the line and I would only recommend it to families who enjoy being outdoors — not just hikers, though, as it is great for really anywhere outside.  As summer approaches, I see its uses adding up, even just walking around the Farmer’s Market with a toddler.  Of course, it is not a small carrier, but it keeps tots up and away without the need to push a stroller.  I see a very long and loving relationship developing with Deuter!
