black widow martini {Halloween}

This Black Widow Martini recipe is sponsored by Sweet’N Low.

Are you guys SO excited for Halloween?!  I just started decorating the house and yard with my daughter and I totally have the Halloween bug.  Every time I am out of the house, I find myself picking up more pumpkins, more blood spatters, more cobwebs and more zombie arms.  I can’t get enough this year!

We had friends over this past weekend and I was feeling very festive — so I decided to create a SPOOKY cocktail that would wow them.  My mind went right to a classic black martini.  You can create a black martini in a variety of ways.  Basically you can just choose your favorite colored liqueurs and blend them til they make black.  If it isn’t black enough you can always add a bit of black food coloring… no one will know!  You’re going to need black food coloring (I like the gel kind) to color the sugar for the rim anyway.

Black Widow Martini

3 oz vodka
1 1/2 oz Chambord
1 1/12 oz Blue Curacao
1/2 packet Sweet’N Low
squeeze of lemon
sugar, black food coloring

Sugar rim of footed martini glass by first dipping rim into lemon juice, then into the black sugar.  Combine liquids in a shaker with ice.  Shake.  Strain into sugar-rimmed footed martini glass.

This sweet martini has been made lower-cal by my addition of Sweet’N Low, instead of a using a simple syrup or agave nectar.  I’ve been on a kick as of lately, creating lower-cal cocktails like this Strawberry Jalapeno Margarita, and this Rye Apple Pie in the Sky.  Sweet’N Low surprisingly blends well and fades into the background — perfect for sweetening up any beverage.

Of course, garnishes are going to be a bit different with this one.  My initial reaction was lemon twist, since lemon is an ingredient… and the yellow would be a great contrast to the black martini, but not spooky enough.  I went with plastic spiders, centipedes and a eyeball instead!
