how to mix patterns like a pro: B2S

I can’t believe summer break is nearly over and back to school time is here. Time is moving at lightspeed lately, so in an effort to keep up, I have been back to school shopping like a pro! Fall is notoriously busy for parents, so being prepared is seriously critical. Prepare for all outfit situations from team sports and playgrounds to classrooms and field trips to dances and special occasions. Buy it all now, in sizes with room to grow. You won’t have time to think about it later. Today, we’re looking at Mini Boden – patterns and textures! This Boden link offers 25% off your order!
I am all about mixing patterns and it is quite on trend at the moment. The first key to creating a mixed pattern friendly wardrobe is:
buy mix and match pieces. Pick a color palate and stick to it. For example, Savannah’s fall wardrobe is mustard yellow, blues and creams mostly – with accent colors when they work. This is easiest when buying many pieces from one brand as their color names ensure exact matches. Creating a mix and match wardrobe is a huge money saver as well since you can create the maximum amount of outfits from a smaller group of pieces.
choose a dominant print. One print should be a bit louder and the other, more subtle. Two subtle prints can definitely work together, but two dominants most likely won’t. You want patterns that compliment, not compete.
mix textures. Multiple patterns can come across busy or mismatched when they flow too well into each other. Separate your patterns even more by using textures like corduroy, velvet, leather, linen, silk and other textiles that are not just soft cotton.
break up patterns with accessories. Belts are your best friend here as they separate top and bottom patterns. Neutral necklaces, bangles and jackets can also bring an outfit together and create cohesion.
choose colors that go together. Maybe this should be rule #1, but the dominant color in each piece should go with the other dominant colors. Play it safe and choose colors in the same family, but different shades. Another sure bet is to go with complimentary colors, or colors on the other end of the color wheel.
calm down with neutrals. If you are sporting a really stand-out piece, pair it with neutrals. Your neutral can also have a pattern, but keep it subtle.
stripes are neutrals. When talking about patterns, stripes are considered neutrals and pair well with most any other pattern ever created. This also goes for polka dots.
play with shapes. Wearing two flowy patterned fabrics may be a losing outfit combination. Instead, choose pieces that fit differently (form fitting with flowy or A line with tight, etc).
accessorize. Bold patterns can also be found in accessories, so we’re not just talking about clothing. Don’t choose accessories that are TOO matchy-matchy, but that do share a color or pattern from the clothing.
When I’m looking for high quality clothing with unique designs and patterns, I think of Mini Boden. Boden clothing always holds up well until it is outgrown – standing up to rugged play and repeated washing. My daughter loves Mini Boden because there are always tons of on-trend yet unique and girly options for her. We sat down together to pull together three fabulous back to school outfits that could mix and match. The first outfit is:
Decorative Skirt + Vanilla Tiny Bud Pointelle
As soon as we saw the gorgeous corduroy skirt decorated with felt flowers and appliques, we swooned. I love that my daughter still wants to dress whimsical. Her favorite clothing piece is always a flowy, twirly skirt. If we are ever shopping in person, every skirt has to receive a twirl test before purchase. I love how this decorative skirt puffs up like a bell when you twirl! The cross-back straps are super adorable but also removable for a different look.
Twirly Frill Skirt + Super Soft Honeycomb Striped Pointelle
The girl’s gotta twirl – I told you! I am a huge fan of this denim twirly skirt as it is a workhorse piece. Not only does it look great with both tops featured here today, but it will go with just about anything. It can be dressed up or dressed down and I love the length – very perfect for school. The striped shirt here is just what they advertise – SUPER SOFT. I want these shirts in my size, please. They are so comfortable, I swear I find Savannah sleeping in them and I can’t blame her!
Jersey Lined English China Stencil Pants + Super Soft Honeycomb Striped Pointelle
No skirt here, so no twirl. Instead, Savannah is showing off her dance moves. Okay, can I tell you how much we LOVE this outfit? I love these two patterns/colors together and both pieces are so super soft. The jersey lined pants have a rad print on them – bunnies, chickens and forest bits, so fun. They are great for school and active days, especially as the weather cools down because they are quite cozy!
You’re loving this adjustable felt flower necklace, aren’t you? I love how versatile it is and how it goes with so much!
