It’s finally time for pumpkin patches, cooler days, changing leaves and everything Halloween. I cannot fully express my excitement to leave summer behind here in Palm Springs. I’m also excited for Halloween, which has really become one of my favorite holidays since it is SO fun with kids. This weekend, the kiddos and I headed to the 99 Cents Only Store to pick up some costume and Halloween dress-up fun. There are so many aisles of spooky décor, costume accessories, party supplies and candy… the 99 is truly a one stop shop for all of your Halloween needs (at budget friendly prices)!

Let me start by saying all of these Halloween costumes begin with a basic black outfit – a black shirt/pants or skirt, a black pantsuit, a black dress… any of these will work. Keep it comfy or glam it up; use black textures like lace, velvet or leather; use whatever you already have in your closet to maximize your budget. When you start with a black base, your accessories and make-up are really going to pop – feel free to go crazy with both!

There are many witch costume options at the 99. I wanted to keep my choices on the glam side for my tween. For this witch look, my daughter wore a black lace dress she already owned, but you can use literally any black dress for this. I built on the lace texture by adding lace accessories from the 99. Gabe skipped this one since most of the accessories were decidedly “for girls”.

witch accessories:

  • lace/skull choker & bracelet set
  • witch hate headband with lace veil
  • black makeup for eyes and lips
  • tights (kids) or high socks (older kids, adults)

The mummy look was the most fun for both of my kids. I was surprised because this is a REALLY simple, inexpensive design. A fitted long sleeve black shirt and pants is best for this one (easier to wrap without bunching). The look is simple, just wrap their bodies with as much mummy wrap as you would like, securing so it stays in place. To make it more fun, we added glow in the dark centipedes within the layers – super fun for nighttime parties and trick-or-treating. Another fun add-on is a skeleton arm/hand that can be wedged up one sleeve for a cool look.  Makeup is optional, but a little dark undereye makeup adds a lot to the look, I think, and a little white could also be useful.

  • “creepy cloth”, cut into strips
  • dark undereye makeup
  • glow in the dark bugs
  • skeleton arm/hand

black cat

Another Halloween costume staple is the black cat and this one is really cute for boys or girls. The 99 has plenty of cat ear headband options and also sets with a tail. I wanted to do something a bit unexpected, and since the 99 has a ton of awesome masks, I paired a simple yet mysterious black mask with my daughter’s cat costume. A black bodysuit or black leotard with black tights is your best costume option for this one.

To me, vampires are on an elegant breed and are a perfect place to glam it up. Please keep in mind, I’m a mom and not a makeup artist, but I think I pulled it off okay. The “Ballerina & Vampire Palette” quality was actually quite good and easy to apply – totally fabulous colors for a vampire makeup. I also used the white cream makeup all over, blended well, which gave a pale skin look without looking too Halloweeny. And then the red sequin masquerade mask really completes the look!

  • vampire teeth
  • vampire makeup
  • red masquerade mask
  • black cape

These are just four Halloween costumes we completed using budget-friendly accessories from the 99, but there are many more options in-store. I have seen costume pieces for ninjas, unicorns, ghosts, samurais, princesses, animals, ghoulish creatures, scary humans, all kinds of ideas. I’m serious when I say Halloween takes up several aisles at the 99! While shopping for costumes or Halloween dress-up fun, make sure to also grab a few decorations for the house. Each year, I always find a few mantle or window items I can’t live without!

Finding Halloween items is surely not the only reason to do the 99, though! I go to my two closest 99 Cents Only Stores 2-3 times a week to check for amazing deals on organic, vegan brands. I’m always surprised by what I find! I also come here to stock up on produce. I’m a mostly raw vegan so you can imagine how much produce I consume on my own, then add in the rest of my family. Shopping for produce at the 99 saves our family a TON of money. A little insider tip, I find the best products/produce on weekdays in the early afternoon once new shipments have been put out. I aim for 11-12pm. ;)
