I have always loved wheatgrass. Everywhere I go where it is available, I order a double shot with an orange slice. I always knew it was great for me–detoxifying, cleansing, and nutrient-rich–but I didn’t know until recently just how great. We are constantly bombarding our bodies with toxins. These toxins come from chemical additives and wastes in our air, water and food supply. This is a fact of life. Luckily, our body has amazing healing capabilities and can clear these toxins out. But when it becomes so overloaded by our eating habits and city living, the toxins start to build up and cause serious damage to our immune system. Our bodies tell us that they are damaged and weakened, but we just take an aspirin to alleviate the symptoms when we should be looking to heal the wounds.
The first step really is to reduce the toxins we take in. We can do this by eating naturally and organically–take 10 steps back from those pre-packaged and processed foods. However, it is not just about reducing, but also about adding. Our daily intake of fresh nutrient-packed foods needs to be high. You always hear that we (people, and especially Americans) always want the easy way out–in being thin, in getting rich, in succeeding at all in life. We want that magic pill to make our hips shrink and our penises enlarge. Well here is where you really can take the easy way out! Fact: 1 ounce of wheatgrass = the nutritional value of 2.5 lbs of green garden vegetables. If taking a 1 ounce shot everyday isn’t easy, I don’t know what is. When I say nutritional value, I mean vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Wheatgrass is far more than blades of nutrition though, and the first benefit is due to chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is well known for its ability to nourish the blood and detoxify poisons–rebuilding our immune systems naturally. Wheatgrass juice is one of the best sources of living chlorophyll available. There are also enzymes in wheatgrass that help the digestion and metabolism of nutrients and abscissic acid, which is known for its anti-tumor activity. There are many practical uses (home remedies) when it comes to wheatgrass. Gargle it for a sore throat, or place a few drops in your nose to naturally relieve congestion in nasal passages and sinuses. Clearly the best way to have fresh wheatgrass everyday, is to grow it yourself. It is economical and you can control the environment, creating the most potent wheatgrass possible. It is quite simple and can be done in any house and even apartment as it can be grown indoors. There are a few steps to growing it, none take up much time at all. The best way to get started is to order a wheatgrass kit, the best being from WheatgrassKits.com. You only need a small space to set up your growing trays. I found my kitchen counter in front of the window and beside the sink (needs to be watered often) to be the best place for me. Your kit will conveniently come with five 1 lb bags (2 cups) of wheatgrass seed. To start your process, rinse a bag of seed several times. Then, pour the seed into a bowl and cover with water. Soak the seeds overnight for 6-8 hours, then drain. Place the soaked seeds back in the dry bowl and cover with a wet paper towel. Keep the towel moist for 24 hours, after which you can remove the towel and see the sprouted seeds. Place a reusable growing tray (21″ x 10″) in the desired area (cool and indirect sunlight). Fill with a mixture of organic growing mix and Azomite (1/4 cup) 1 inch deep; and sprinkle with with water–creating no puddles. Spread the sprouted seeds over the soil (do not bury) 1 layer thick. Don’t worry if they look cramped because that is normal. Now cover the seeds with four layers of paper towels. Spray with water evenly until water comes out the slots of the bottom of the tray. Keep the towels wet for the next few days and your grass will take root and grow. It will only take about three days from here to grow snippable blades. When the grass is about one inch high, uncover and expose the wheatgrass to indirect sunlight and do not let it get warm or mold will grow. When the grass is 6-7 inches, start cutting and juicing. One tray will produce about 14-18 ounces of wheatgrass juice. I know there is an idiom that relates watching grass grow to boredom, but wheatgrass grows so fast that it is entertaining. Just make sure to keep watering–all that fast growing require constant moisture.
So let’s talk juicers real quick. If you are into juicing fruits, look into juicer like Hurom or Omega 8004/8006. If you’re like me and rather puree vegeatables and fruits in your blender, all you need is a manual wheatgrass juicer. NOTE: the wheatgrass is most potent 6 minutes after juicing so be prompt with consuming! We are drinking wheatgrass everyday now and I couldn’t be happier with it. Even my four old is drinking her wheatgrass juice, which we don’t hide, but mix in front of her with a glass of OJ.
