If you love to see nature in bloom, now is the time to head outside. After a very wet winter this year, Southern California is busting at the seams with lush greenery and wildflowers. I’ve never seen our local desert quite so colorful in the decade we’ve lived here! While the blooms started popping in March, the wildflowers are holding on strong. Now the trees, shrubs and ocotillo are also blooming and I’m just in love – my sinuses might be suffering, but I’m still in love!  If you’re looking to venture into the outdoors and see the blooms, check out my tips below! California is infamous for its fields of golden poppies. These rolling hills covered in California Poppies are worth the hype 100%. They are worth the crowds, the far away parking and any hike to get a better view. They truly are breathtaking and unique. If we ever move away from California, I will definitely miss these little orange, cup-shaped jewels.

If you find yourself in the desert right now, you are in luck. After all the record-breaking rain we’ve gotten this year, the desert is fully dressed with brightly colored flowers. I love to see these gorgeous blooms in unexpected environments like the harsh desert. I mean, how gorgeous is this?

head towards the sun

Wildflowers love sunshine so when you head out on your wildflower expedition, choose a sunny time of day. Look for trails that are in sunny, south-facing areas. Don’t forget your sunscreen and hat!

research areas online

Before you go on a wildflower goose chase, check online for known areas of wildflowers. A quick Google search or Instagram hashtag can help reveal the popular spots along with the best kept secrets. You can also find out important information ahead of time like parking, crowd level and hours.

consider the time of year

Different areas (climates) will bloom at different times of year. While some areas peak March-April, other areas will be fullest May-June. Do a little research on your local area (or the area you’re traveling to) to figure out when the best time to view the flowers is. Elevation is a factor but as a general rule, March-April in the southern sates, May-June in the northern.

bring a field guide

While the main draw to viewing wildflowers is to photograph them, it’s also a great chance to get to know your local flora names. Look for a wildflower field guide for your area so you can identify what you’re looking at – if only for a well-informed Instagram caption.
