skin vs pool: summer skincare {Burt’s Bees}

This summer pool skincare routine has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #ANaturalClean #CollectiveBias

Summer can be super harsh on your skin.  You need sun protection year round, but especially during the seasons you spend outside the most.  The sun isn’t your skin’s only opponent, though. The pool and the chemicals that comes along with it can be very damaging – but don’t worry, take the right skincare precautions and you will be sitting pretty!

Truth be told, summer is off-season here in the desert. Palm Springs is pretty harsh right now and us locals hide inside as much as we can, dreaming of perfect, paradisaical fall!  We’re almost there.  The only time I willingly agree to go outside is if a pool is involved.  I mean, I’ll go out for groceries or doctor’s appointments if I have to, but I’ll put it off for as long as I can.  Luckily, we have a pool, so I manage to get my daily dose of sunshine and vitamin D, but mostly, I prefer to venture out at after sunset.

I think a lot of people don’t know how to properly take care of their skin before and after the pool.  Most skip the pre-pool rules altogether, but that is just as important as the post.

skincare rules of the pool

  • pre-rinse: a quick shower rinse before entering the pool is only proper etiquette – it hydrates your skin so you absorb less chlorine (this also goes for your hair).
  • post-rinse: right out of the pool, rinse off for a few minutes to wash away any chemicals left on your skin.
  • shampoo: cleanse your hair with a clarifying shampoo to pull out any chemical residue.
  • cleanse: wash your face with a gentle cleanser.  Pool chemicals can irritate skin, especially sensitive types, so choose a a gentle cleanser that will also restore moisture.
  • moisturize: once the chemicals are gone, it is time to rehydrate your skin

My pool skincare routine has been totally revitalized by Burt’s Bees, and it all started with a cleanser.  The 100% natural Burt’s Bees Cleansing Oil is a gentle cleanser that will remove dirt, makeup and other icky things like pool chemical residue.  Oil cleansers are best for getting stubborn makeup off like mascara and lip liner, so I always chose them, but I cannot stand cleansers that leave a residue behind (this one doesn’t).  This cleanser contains a unique combination of natural moisturizers, including coconut and argan oils, that not only cleanse but soften and hydrate skin.

When I went into Target to buy my Cleansing Oil, I was pretty much blinded by the array of natural skincare products from Burt’s Bees.  It was all I could do to not outstretch my arm and sweep them all into my cart.  I did also want a new moisturizer though, something that would leave my complexion even and glowing.  Burt’s Bees Brightening Even Skin Tone Moisturizing Cream is what I chose.

The Brightening Even Skin Tone Moisturizing Cream with daisy extract is a luxiourous cream that leaves skin super soft and hydrated.  It is clinically proven to even skin tone and help diminish the appearance of dark spots and discoloration – sun damage be gone!  After continued use, it brightens your skin, leaving behind a glowing complexion.  Infused with summer snowflake, daisy blossom, and other botanical extracts, this super rich moisturizing cream also helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  My abused desert-dwelling skin is thanking me right now.  Plus, it smells great!
