When I was pregnant with my five year old, I remember hearing about how it was unsafe to stand next to the microwave due to radiation. Well now we know so much more about radiation and people have increased their use of laptops, cell phones, PDA’s, mp3 players, portable media devices, televisions, power lines, microwaves, etc. All of these items emit non-ionizing radiation. Radiation has been known as a health risk to young children and developing fetuses, but the extent and nature of the risk is still under debate by scientific experts. - Use a headset or speaker phone for cell phone calls. Don’t rest laptops or tablets directly on your body, especially pregnant bellies.
- Switch our cell phone to “airplane mode” to shut off the cellular and wireless signals, especially before handing to children
- Limit your time on wireless devices. When possible, use a corded landline for calls.
- Radiation levels vary by cell phones, so make sure you’re checking SAR ratings.
