Neapolitan Protein Smoothie {Skinny Gut Shake}

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Renew Life Formulas for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

The pursuit to achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a tricky one. It is more than just calories in, calories out. After all, proper health/fitness is a lifestyle, not a series of quick fixes. I don’t promote quick fixes, rest assured. I just recently heard about the Skinny Gut program by Brenda Watson and was intrigued by the concept behind it. The diet addresses the battle many of us daily face with carb and sugar cravings. Cravings can be the pitfall of any diet as they are difficult to suppress — but Skinny Gut shows us a new way to curb cravings, store less fat and maintain digestive balance.

The Skinny Gut Diet focuses on the reduction of sugar and an increase of protein, fiber, probiotics and living, fermented foods. It is all about balancing the gut (i.e. the 100 trillion bacteria in there both good and bad). Here is a realistic diet that addresses the problems with healthy solutions. I was a Human Nutrition Food and Exercise major in college and to say I am a “nutrition nerd” is an understatement. I am fascinated with nutrition levels of foods and how foods interact and affect different aspects of the human body. I’m also a fan of debunking fad diets and steering people away from harmful claims. Many diets don’t start out with negative intent, but are hard to stick to due to the lack of support structure, and that is where Skinny Gut has it figured out.

Skinny Gut offers nutritional supplements to guide your hand and offer convenient support. Convenience is always key when it comes to sticking with new diet and exercise plans. Today I’m sharing the Renew Life Skinny Gut Ultimate Shakes with you guys — an easy supplement to add to your existing smoothies, which is exactly where I like to hide everything I need for the day – who’s with me?

The Skinny Gut Shake is an organic, grain-free, plant-based protein and fiber powder. It contains:

The powder is non-GMO, low fat, low calorie, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan – and contains no added sugar, no artificial ingredients or preservatives. In a word, perfect.

My experience

All plant-based protein powders have a similar taste to me, which is one I like to cover up. Let’s be honest, right? The Skinny Gut Shake comes in vanilla and chocolate — I received the Renew Life Skinny Gut Vanilla Shake. Now usually I like to cover up my protein powder with sugar (fruits and raw honey or agave nectar), but the Skinny Gut Diet is all about lowering your sugar intake as sugar feeds the bad bacteria, so I had to go somewhere else for sweetness. Watson recommends restricting the fruit in your smoothie to 1/2 cup, which is still a good amount of fruit but I was missing my honey.

Here is an easy way to boost the flavor without adding additional sugars — for the Renew Life Skinny Gut Chocolate Shake, add in raw chocolate powder (cacao powder)… nothing sweetened!! The cacao bean contains more antioxidant flavonoids than red wine, green tea and blueberries, plus contains a rich supply of magnesium and other nutrients. This will amp up the chocolate flavor without adding any sugar.

For the vanilla flavor, yeah you guessed it, add in natural vanilla bean, which contains minimal natural sugar per oz. You can easily find the beans at your local grocery store (a little goes a long way) or you can find it in powder form.

I was feeling particularly indulgent today and wanted chocolate and vanilla. I also had frozen strawberries on hand so Neapolitan it was! Wow, this is YUMMY and so filling. I had one in the morning and I swear I had to force myself to eat a small snack of nuts later in the afternoon. I can definitely vouch for the curbed appetite. wow.
