I have been eyeing the basket of wooden blocks collecting dust under Ivy’s bed for a while They are such a great classic toy, but hadn’t seen the light of day in a year at least. So, I busted them out and got an awesome reaction… blocks had been
reborn – rebuilt so to speak! Both my six year old and three year old girls were so excited to build and demolish and build some more – intricate designs based on the wisdom of all their years!
This made me curious about what types of innovations may have emerged for the most old school of toys. The go to site for crafty evolutions? Etsy, naturally. My search brought me to the lovely vintage fashion blocks by Mmim. Delicate design doesn’t infringe on the playability of these durable crafts.
Brooke aka Mmim is a mom of three who somehow finds the time and energy to handcraft these blocks, among various other treasures for her Etsy shop. She sands all natural wood which she decoupages (non-toxic) with adorable vintage paper doll style gals and very pretty decorative prints on the flip-sides. The blocks are then hand-sanded and treated with an acrylic glaze (non-stinky) for durability. Antiqued on the edges, these are so smooth they feel like marble!
I took a calculated risk and gave these to my daughter,Vivian, for her sixth birthday. She is super into “fashion” but can be very judgmental as to what is “babyish”. My timing was right and she was really excited to receive these; she spent a good half hour admiring their style and mix -n- matching the outfits. She then incorporated them into a pyramid she’d been building and has played with them several times since. I love that these appear so precious, but are functional to boot – perfect keepsakes!
