I am always on the lookout for books that will educate my daughter about other cultures. So, when I received Lola’s Fandango by Anna Witte, I was super excited to read it with my daughter. For the past two years our daughter has been taking spanish class and this was the perfect book to pair with her already budding knowledge of the Latin culture.
Lola’s Fandango takes place in a small apartment building in a big city. Lola is a young Spanish girl who lives in the shadow of her big sister, Clementina, who seems to have and do everything better than her. While hiding out in her parents’ closet, Lola stumbles upon a pair of shoes that belong to her Mami (mother). Through some questioning she learns that these special shoes are for Flamenco dancing. As soon as she hears that Clementina doesn’t know how to Flamenco dance, Lola begs her Papi (father) to teach her. Papi and Lola secretly practice dancing on the rooftop of their apartment building.
On the eve of her Mami’s surprise party, Lola channels her duende, her inner spirit, and performs for her family. Finally moving out of her sister’s shadow, Lola becomes a star. This book is filled with rhythm and music and is pleasantly illustrated. Lola’s Fandango is a delightful story which you will surely enjoy.
Included with the book is a storytime CD, which turned out to be a really fun added bonus. My daughter has insisted on listening to the CD every night after we’ve read the story together. She enjoys lying in her bed and following along with her book.
