science is cool {books for kids}

As a homeschool mom, I get really excited about educational books, especially those scientific or historical in nature.  My first grader is really interested in the whys and hows, and since I am a far cry from a scientist, I turn to books that she can understand.  Here are a few favorites currently, sent for review.

how the weather works book review

Is there anything more engaging than a pop-up book?  I think not, which is why these first two books are real winners.  How the Weather Works by Christiane Dorion does an amazing job at breaking down the complexity of weather and climate in easy to understand blurbs and illustrations (by Beverley Young).  With each turn of the page, there are new pop-ups, pull tabs and mini booklets — that are functional and help explain how weather works — not just there for looks.  The information is top notch and very right on for kids aged 7-12.  I’ll be using this book with my daughter for quite a time to come.   The subjects are:

  • What causes the weather?
  • Where does rain come from?
  • What’s a weather front?
  • Why does the wind blow?
  • How can we predict the weather?
  • What is a hurricane?
  • What is climate?
  • What was climate like in the past?
  • Are we changing the climate?

SUper Science Feel the Force book review

Super Science: Feel the Force! by Tom Adams is a pop-up full of physics fun.  For me, physics wasn’t fun.  It was my most detested subject in high school but as an adult, I find myself fascinated.  One of the upsides to homeschooling is I have the opportunity to relearn with a more mature mind… it’s pretty awesome!  Physics is the perfect subject for a pop-up/pull tab book as that medium allows kids to really see physics in motion.  Detailed and very informative, this book is perfect for kids 7-12.  It is amazing as a homeschool resource because there are 5 hands-on experiments suggested and explained to really drive home the lesson.  Topics explored:

  • gravity
  • friction
  • buoyancy
  • pressure
  • sound
  • light
  • electricity
  • magnetism

electrical wizard nikola tesla book review

It wouldn’t be a science post without Nikola Tesla.  Electrical Wizard: How Nikola Tesla Lit Up the World by Elizabeth Rusch is the story of Tesla, from a 3 year old boy discovering static electricity to a young man fighting past his hero-turned-rival, Thomas Edison, to light up the Chicago State Fair and harness Niagara Falls to electrify New York City.  I’ve never understood why American curriculum focuses on Edison’s inventions but graze over Tesla… not in this house!  Nikola Tesla’s inventions are responsible for the creation of remote controls, fluorescent lights, X-rays, speedometers, cell phones, and the radio.  He was truly a man ahead of his time — a one-man revolution.  Amazingly written, Electrical Wizard pays rightful homage to this brilliant man and the illustrations by Oliver Dominguez keep kids engaged in Tesla’s fascinating story.

Copies were provided by Candlewick Press to facilitate this review.
