the dirty old west and kids {Pioneertown trip}

Life in the desert can be very dirty.  No, scratch that, it IS very dirty, especially with kids.  Cooped up indoors, kids create big messes; take them outdoors and a whole new world of potential mess opens up. My family likes to enjoy our beautiful desert landscape so we are always taking mini trips to soak in the sun, squish the sand between our toes and feel the warm spring breeze on our skin.  This week our day trip was to Pioneertown, a historic community that began as a Old West movie set!  With the epic winds we’ve been having lately, sand was twirling in the air as we navigated poop-riddled horse stables and dilapidated buildings– needless to say, PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes were completely necessary.

My husband and I operate a photography business here in Palm Springs and the kids often tag along. It’s a blessing to be able to spend time with my husband and my kids pretty much all day long and mostly, it is all amazing.  We have the opportunity to goof around and work together, kids included!

The kids’ lives are often spent off camera, playing in whatever desert surroundings we are in and yesterday was no different.  While I was in front of the camera this time (a rare occasion), shooting for Still Rad Clothing, a company operated by a good family friend (more on that in the next post), my husband was behind the camera and my kids… my kids were off in the dirt as usual!  By the end of the shoot, they are typically covered head to toe in dirt and are not allowed to entire the car until they receive a full rub down with PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes – especially hands and face!

This particular day, I was clomping around OK Corral in stable-inappropriate heels, trying to avoid the “horse apples” otherwise known as poop, climbing and mounting rickety fences.  Anything for the shot, right?  At least I had my husband for piggyback rides…especially since the previous day was spent with my leg propped up and an ice pack on my knee!

Meanwhile, my kids were just out of camera range with our lovely assistant and local tour guide for the day.  For those of you who live in Southern California, Pioneertown is in Yucca, next to Joshua Tree National Forrest.  It is the ultimate hipster and tourist spot, home to lots of old Hollywood memories and the infamous Pappy & Harriet’s, a rite of passage music venue for musicians.  The community started as a live-in old west movie set so the actors could literally live on set.  The history is rich and so intriguing – you can literally feel the past in the air.  Magical.  Magical and dusty.  Yesterday we spent most of the afternoon at the OK Corral down by the sheriff’s office, jail and fully functional post office.

Incorporating my work life with my toddler is probably the biggest struggle as he requires constant supervision and attention.  Luckily, we have friends to help us out, but there are some unavoidable moments on the shoot like missed-nap meltdowns, cactus accidents and that pacifier… that pacifier is always in the dirt!

Spring is here and that means a lot of things.  For us in the desert, it means getting outdoors as much as possible before the suffocating summer heat slides into town.  It also means, dun dun dun, Spring Cleaning!  While you are cleaning your house top to bottom, keep you and your kids’ hands germ free! PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes kill 99.99% of illness-causing germs, perfect for sanitizing hands and killing illness-causing germs.  …and if you find yourself amidst the desert dust and “horse apples” remember to bring along your PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes canister, perfect for on-the-go!

On our way out of town, we swung by Walmart to pick up PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes.  Tricky guys, these new hand sanitizer wipes are not found in the aisle with the other hand sanitizers, rather they are found in the household cleaning aisle.  See photo below.  Got it? They are available in 70-count and 35-count canisters.  Beginning on May 17th, be on the lookout for a coupon in the Sunday paper so you can save $1.00 on any PURELL® Wipes canister or Save $1.00 on any two PURELL® Products! Meanwhile, head over right now to find a PURELL® Wipes Walmart Coupon!  Purell also has a loyalty program where you can rack up points for prizes to keep you and your family healthier, plus be first to receive news on special offers and promotions!

That’s a peek into my daily dirty life – where would you use PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes?

    I’ve never heard of Pioneertown but I’d love to take the kids there. We went to Tombstone a few years ago and loved it. We’re totally into the Old West. #client
