how to clean designer suede {plaid & suede fall}

This designer suede cleaning tutorial is a sponsored post for LISTERINE® and Socialstars #RinseMadeRad

As a child of the 90s, I’ve always loved plaid.  This resurgence of the plaid trend has lit a fire in my fashion soul and I can’t pass it up, on anything.  My plaid shirt collection is pretty much out of control for fall already, especially in red.  I will be dominating the lumberjack look all season!  Fall also means I break out my suede – suede skirts, suede boots and – my absolute favorite pair of shoes – my almond suede platform sandals.

The problem with favorite shoes is that you want to wear them all the time.  These Jimmy Choos are literally the most comfortable heel (including wedges!) that I’ve ever owned.  I could jog in these babies if I really needed to.  I also am a huge fan of nude shoes, high heels and short platforms; all of that added together creates the world’s most perfect everyday, sexy heel…at least to me!  The other problem with my favorite shoes is that they are suede, which is a precious fabric.  You can’t get them dirty (oh God, please keep away all water and child vomit) without them looking totally ruined.

Yeah, they really took a beating, and that child vomit part, true story.  After last fall, I put these sweethearts away until this year, afraid to try and clean them for fear of ruining them completely.  My flannel is just begging for their return, though, so I went out and purchased a few tools, read every available tutorial/hack and said a prayer.

Step one:

With a suede brush, loosen dirt from the suede in smooth, even strokes.

Step two:

Spray suede with suede cleaner in light EVEN strokes. Don’t over-saturate the suede, and definitely make sure it is an even later of moisture.

Step three:

With a suede brush or the cap of the cleaner, lightly scrub the cleaner into the shoe. Be delicate but the suede can take some pressure.

Step four:

Once clean and dry, spray a light and even coat of suede protector on. Allow to dry and spray again. Do not saturate the suede!

Step five:

Store in original bag and box, or in a pillowcase if you have lost the bag. Every few wears, give the suede a light brushing to remove dust and dirt.  A suede eraser can remove any new stains without having the clean the whole shoe again.

Have I mentioned how much I love plaid, especially for fall 2015?  Clothing isn’t the only place we are seeing plaid though – beauty brands are also following trend.  It brought a smile to my face to see a brand I use daily bring plaid into their limited edition packaging.  LISTERINE® mouth wash released a line of plaid bottles as part of Target®’s Mad For Plaid collection, available through 10/31 for $4.99.

Brushing alone misses 75% of your mouth, so flossing and rinsing twice a day is really important to your oral health.  I’m pretty obsessive with rinses and without them I never feel like my mouth is totally fresh.  It goes without saying that I will be stocking up on these LISTERINE® plaid beauties while they are available.  Good thing I have this Target® Cartwheel Offer – 10% off, Buy 3 bottles get one free (in-stores).  LISTERINE® Antiseptic is the world’s #1 dentist-recommended brand of over-the-counter antimicrobial mouthwash, so it is always my go-to buy.  To find out more about LISTERINE® Brand products, visit
