Honey Lemon Party: Big Hero 6 {girl style}

It is relatively rare for us to anticipate the release of a Blu-ray so greatly, but Big Hero 6 was one.  Ever since we first were introduced to the citizens of San Fransokyo in the movie theater, we couldn’t wait to own the movie!  There is something special about this one guys – it really tugs at your heart strings and has such a great message for kids (and adults!)  Last Tuesday my daughter and I took off for Walmart to purchase the Big Hero 6 Blu-Ray/DVD + Gift With Purchase Set . It includes a digital movie on Vudu while supplies last! Simply scan your receipt using the Savings Catcher in the Walmart app. Then look for a message on your phone or email. Now you can watch Big Hero 6 on any device!

It is difficult impossible to ignore the insane lovableness of Baymax.  He’s big and squeezy, he’s kind and caring, he’s strong and powerful… best character ever, right?? …but when I decided to host a Big Hero 6 party for my daughter, Honey Lemon was all I could think about!

Honey Lemon is completely fabulous, smart, brave and colorful!

It’s winter, even here in sunny Palm Springs.  This past party weekend, it rained in the valley and snowed on the mountain; it was a freezing 55 during the day!  I decided our Big Hero 6 Sleepover Party needed to stay indoors so we made it a night all about crafting and baking, two of my daughter’s and her friends’ favorite hobbies!

I have this theory that it is best to teach kids difficult cooking techniques first.  Along the way, they learn the basics.  My daughter loves to cook and (especially) bake.  She dreams of being on Masterchef Junior and Chopped so who knows what the future holds.  We just tackled the very finicky French macaron recently, posts coming soon, but for our Honey Lemon Party, profiteroles seemed a better fit — delicate and delicious Honey Lemon Profiteroles!!

Profiteroles have a bit of a reputation for being difficult but they are not so bad once you have your technique down!  They are super fun to make and the anticipation of seeing if they will rise is palpable!  There was a collective scream of excitement from the girls as they watched their Honey Lemons puff up… such a feeling of pride!

The profiteroles we made were pretty traditional. Beautiful buttery, airy pastry with a homemade whipped cream stuffed inside, topped with a honey, lemon, white chocolate sauce.  I wouldn’t have previously thought to put those three ingredients together — thanks for the inspiration, Honey Lemon!!  Recipe at the bottom of the post.

Also on our sleepover tablescape was super easy Baymax Marshmallow Pops made with just three things: jumbo campfire marshmallows, black icing and lollipop sticks.  Find the little squeezy tube of icing at Walmart for easy application!

Okay, so let’s get to the really fun part of the night — crafting!!  I set up craft stations in the living room where we have Big Hero 6 playing on repeat.  No one could get enough Big Hero 6, including myself (obsession!) and it was the perfect inspiration for our crafts.  First craft station was a Honey Lemon Chem-Balls Manicure – or Baymax as some wanted. (or both!)

Next up was two bracelet stations, one with beads (aka Honey Lemon chem-balls), the other, fabric with colors inspired by chem-balls.  These types of easy crafts are perfect for movie nights because the girls could hang on the couch and craft away while watching Big Hero 6.  It also was a good wind-down from all the sugar of the early evening.  If you hostess large groups of girls often, you know how exhausting they can be… those sleeping bags were looking pretty great to me by this point!  = )

This was my first time experimenting with fabric bracelets, but will not be the last.  They turned out SO cute and were SO easy.  The girls absolutely flipped over them, thrilled they could make them 100% themselves (uses a hot glue gun so for the younger kids parents need to help) and overjoyed that they looked so fab worn stacked!

Materials needed:

  • 1/2 inch fabric strips
  • plastic shower curtain rings
  • hot glue gun

Instructions

  1. Hot glue one end of the fabric to the inside of the shower curtain ring.
  2. Begin wrapping the fabric tightly around the ring, overlapping fabric and adding bits glue as you go.
  3. When you get to the end, glue to inside of ring and trim the excess fabric.

Another reason why crafts are so perfect for parties is that they negate the need for gift bags.  The girls got to take home their homemade Honey Lemon accessories – and show them off at school today!  All in all, I would call this party a roaring, colorful success!

Did I mention we also made Baymax fabric bracelets with white fabric and a black Sharpie? = )

Well you lost me at the bracelets, but just b/c I would love them but my boys would not. I do love that this movie had girl superheros b/c sometimes my boys don’t think girls can do anything and Mama has to set them straight!

These types of movies and subsequent party ideas are always so boy-heavy… had to bring some girl flair because Big Hero 6 showcases the female heroes quite well!!
