printing and math practice {LeapFrog}

Summers are notorious for being a drain on the brain.  Kids often lose quite a bit of knowledge from the previous school year during the summer, so I hope you have been actively keeping those kids learning!  August is here (say what?!) and with it, a new school season.  I’ve officially decided to homeschool one more year as my daughter enters 1st grade.  This means I have been stocking up on resources, including those from LeapFrog, sent to me for review.

When I think of LeapFrog I think of educational toys and tablets, not paper based learning tools, but here they are!  This is the second year that MEGA Brands America has released these tools to develop school skills including counting, handwriting, word recognition and more. This year there are new products in the school years of Pre-K, K-1, 2-3.

My daughter is at the point where she can write properly, legibly yet crudely at times.  Right now a big focus for us is improving her spacing and proportions to create, yeah, pretty handwriting.  The only way to achieve perfect penmanship is with lined writing tablets like the Advanced Printing Practice tablet from LeapFrog.  This 80 sheet pad contains both 5/8″ rule, 5/8″ rule with grid lines and primary (1/2″) rule so they can seamlessly transition as they advance through grade levels.  This is a must have for kids K-1 and I foresee me purchasing a bunch more of these through this year of homeschool.

To the left you will see the Dry Erase Printing Practice workbook.  This is an eco-friendly option for practicing proper letter formation of both upper and lowercase, spelling numbers and improving fine motor skills.  Inside the workbook is also a blank area for freehand writing or drawing.

For a gal who really never enjoyed math, it’s surprisingly a fun subject for me to teach.  Maybe my daughter is a math whiz and she makes it enjoyable, time will tell, but we enjoy the subject now.  Flashcards are great for pretty much every subject, but math especially.  The Addition and Subtraction Flashcards from LeapFrog have been great tools for my daughter.  The Addition pack contains 80 cards for practice in addition, counting and creating equations.  The Subtraction pack contains 77 cards and has the same style as the addition, equations with counting dots.  My daughter often grabs these on her own to go through as she wants to be lightning fast.  Go for it, kid!

A large part of being your child’s teacher is being their cheerleader.  Without ample encouragement and praise, homeschool will be a failure.  My daughter thrives on positive reinforcement so I was super happy to find Success Charts with Award Certificates and Reward Stickers.  The weekly charts are great for setting goals and tracking progress, while the certificates and stickers are perfect for rewarding your child’s accomplishments.  I’ll be giving out the certificates at the end of semesters and when my daughter has a really major breakthrough. The stickers are a fun part of everyday lessons and they never get old — kids love stickers!

LeapFrog products by MEGA Brands are available for purchase (MSRP $0.99 – $24.99 for children ages 3 and up) at major retailers including Toys R Us, Michaels, Joann’s, Target, Walmart, Officemax and Cosco.  At Target and Walmart, look for them near the stationary and writing instruments, rather than toys or school supplies.

Product was provided by MEGA Brands America for review purposes; all opinions are 100% my own.

Your idea is outstanding; the problem is something that not sufficient folks are speaking intelligently about. I am extremely pleased that I stumbled across this in my search for one thing relating to this.
