I’m a holiday junkie, but Halloween and Christmas are definitely my favorites. Around Halloween, I am completely into telling stories, watching ghost shows on TV and decorating the house. Ironically, they don’t play very many Halloween kid shows on TV, so it’s slightly hard to get my daughter all excited while watching a few of the shows she’s allowed to during the week. Scholastic Storybook Treasures has a set of classic Halloween Stories packed into a box set. Three DVDs with 18 different stories that have won 5 awards. These are all classic stories, that some she has the books too, which is really fun!
My daughter and I were jumping up and down when they arrived. A thirty year-old-something woman jumping up and down like a fool, it really happened. I was really excited about the Maurice Sendak DVD which has all of his stories on it; first story being Where the Wild Things Are. The classic story from his book that has caused quite a stir the last few decades. There are even a set of stories with song performed by Carole King, I love her. I didn’t even let my daughter choose, this one went in first to play.
What’s perfect is that each of the short stories are just that, short stories. They’re like reading a book, so it keeps your child’s attention and just as one story ends, another begins. You have the choice at the beginning of the DVD to have the read-along subtitles on or off. My daughter isn’t starting to read yet, so mine are always set to off (for now). I’m actually kinda shocked as to how well they truly keep her attention. By the time the 6th story comes around, she’s still sitting there, completely into the stories. About ten minutes into another other movie, she’s wandering around the house trying to find her Barbie and Ken dolls to play with. I’m so excited to have a classic Halloween collection that has great stories and my daughter loves.
