Half-Up Bouffant tutorial {date night hair}

I’m sure you’ve noticed that the 60s are back and trending hard — in fashion, decor, architecture and beauty.  I happen to think I was meant to live during that decade, so I’m all for the resurgence!  Of course when I was asked to share an easy, on-trend fall hairstyle, I leapt from my chair and shouted “where is my rat tail comb?!?!”  After all, 60’s hair styles are all about the bump.  I thought about doing a relaxed take on a beehive but quickly opted for the bouffant, my favorite date night hair.

The bouffant is said to have been created for Marie Antoinette because she had relatively thin hair and desired a fuller look.  The bouffant made a huge comeback in the 60’s and that is what period most people associate the style with.  I love the bouffant because it looks elegant yet somehow casual and harder to achieve than it really is.  A bouffant is quite easy and I have a three step tutorial for you for your next date night!

So if you are feeling very… blah with flat hair like me yesterday… did ya catch my instagram?

Oh, wait!! I’m getting ahead of myself.  So I need to step back and tell you what inspired this voluptuous bouffant — the Suave Professionals line, particularly the Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Extra Hold Hairspray and Suave Professionals Volumizing Mousse.  Without these two products, I couldn’t have achieved the height and hold of my bouffant.

Previous to this campaign, I had no idea the variety of, and quality of, Suave Professionals products.  Now I am paying attention.  This whole #HairOfTheDay look I  created was made possible solely with Suave …from the the alcohol-free Volumizing Mousse, which plumps with collagen and folic acid to the Touchable Finish Extra Hold Hairspray that dries on contact to lock in style while remaining touchable.  Man did I get a LOT of hold with these two products, but without feeling like helmet-head — and at the end of the night, they washed out beautifully.

On the lower half of my hair, I used the Suave Professionals Natural Infusion Moisturizing Light Oil Spray with Macadamia Oil to moisturize and bump up the shine factor.  Free from parabens and dyes, this incredible oil with macadamia and white orchid smells SO SO good and keeps my hair looking healthy.

Suave’s message is : every day presents an opportunity to have a great hair moment. Just 3 simple steps and Suave is all it takes to create a beautiful style.  Don’t just Pin your favorite looks — live beautiful today and try out an exceptional everyday look!  Use the hashtag #HairOfTheDay when sharing your looks on social media!

The Half-Up Bouffant

1. Start with freshly washed, towel-dried hair.  Apply Suave Professionals Volumizing Mousse throughout.  Blow dry straight.  Section off a fistful of hair at the crown, allowing a decent amount of hair for the front section.  Gather the hair at the crown into an elastic, twist and wrap into a bun, securing with bobby pins.

2.  Tease the front section of your hair with a rat tail comb or teaser brush.  Tease, baby, tease, making sure to spray each teased section with Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Extra Hold Hairspray.

3.  Delicately form the teased hair back over the bun and secure under the bun with bobby pins.  Pull back both sides and pin under the bun as well.  Spray the whole bouffant with more hairspray.  Add a band, a bow or a scarf to accessorize the hair and add more drama.

While this is my favorite date night do, I also love it for parties and events, even weddings.  It is just one of those looks that can translate from day to night, from casual to black tie.  You can style the bottom in SO many ways.  Give it a bit of texture with a curl or crimp or channel your inner Holly Golightly and create pig tails!

    That is such an awesome hairstyle! I love it! I’m not very talented with hairstyling, but I’m tempted to try this one.

      I’m not either, believe me! I wouldn’t have time to do this everyday but no biggie for a date night or girl’s night out! Just make sure you grab an extra bottle of hairspray ;)
