family fun at tourist attractions {Hollywood Wax Museum}

It isn’t hard to find family fun in Los Angeles.  When my husband (then boyfriend) and I moved to LA from the East Coast, we hit all of the tourist attractions, did it all.  Then there were some years of avoiding the tourist traps, hitting the more in the know destinations (read: bars).  But now that we have two kids, one nearly 7, we are back at those same tourist attractions, this week — the Hollywood Wax Museum.

The Hollywood Wax Museum is situated on Hollywood Blvd near Highland, probably the most touristy spot in LA. It has been there since 1965 and is owned by the same family as then.  It is the longest-running wax museum in the United States, making it a real must-see if you are visiting LA.

It was the first wax museum to be dedicated just to Hollywood, to pop culture (read: actors and musicians).  The wax celebrities featured change, the least popular ones getting the boot thanks to customer feedback.  The figures are truly pieces of art, created by numerous sculptors, molders and finishers.

The Hollywood Wax Museum is super easy to navigate, celebrities of all kinds everywhere — a very eclectic mix.  They are pretty lifelike, and I was kind of creeped out at first, as was my 7 year old.  I mean, you walk into the A-list red carpet room and they are just all standing around you, staring right at you!

But we relaxed quickly and were laughing and posing, of course Neil needed a shot with Angie. I wonder what he is whispering to her… maybe I don’t want to know! ha! See, the fun has already begun.

Savannah was particularly smitten with Nicole Kidman, who was looking rather spectacular!

Currently there are two Arnold Schwarzenegger wax people — Terminator and Conan.  I mean it is California and he is the Governator.  While my husband was drawn to the Terminator,

I sided with Conan the Barbarian.  I mean, who could blame me right?

What I love about the Hollywood Wax Museum is that they encourage interaction and photo-opps — so I had to get all nuzzled in close…

You will see celebrities as themselves, but also your favorite actors in their best performances.  The Titanic set was a big hit with everyone I saw coming through the museum…

As was Forrest Gump, a personal favorite.  So many valuable moments and life lessons in this epic, romantic drama.  That bench is iconic, no?

Great for groups, both families and friends, the Hollywood Wax Museum is surprisingly spacious and the staff leave you alone. Guests are very considerate and everyone has the chance to get each photo they want.  Great atmosphere!

We traveled around (oh, did I mention we had Gabriel with us as well in a stroller?).  We rounded a corner and there was Hugh in this very dark very private area… Leave it to Neil to be very comfortable with himself!

Like I mentioned, it isn’t just actors and movie sets, there are also musicians, singers and twerkers.  Is it just me or is Savannah’s head only 1/2 the size of Beyonce’s thigh diameter?

Overall, my family’s experience at the Hollywood Wax Museum was a very positive one.  The adults had a blast posing, shouting movie quotes and watching Savannah’s bulging eyes as we moved from one exhibit to the next. Fun for the whole family, or you and your girls after a few drinks!  Keep in the know by liking Hollywood Wax Museum on Facebook

    I love your pictures! I was actually outside of the Hollywood Wax Museum in Hollywood but didn’t have time to stop in. Hopefully on the next visit!

    There is a wax museum in Gatlinburg and I’ve always wondered what it would be like. I’m afraid I’d be all creeped out. Your pictures are great, though. Love your daughter’s pose with Forrest, but the King of the World pose is my favorite! I’d want to be a Charlie’s Angel. Some of those wax statues are unbelievably lifelike. We might have to do these for our family Christmas photos next year and let people wonder if they’re real!!
