DIY Parsons Desk Vanity

Recently I decided that I was tired of leaning over my tall bathroom counter, squinting and stretching, trying to apply an even eyeliner.  It was time to buy a vanity.  When I was searching for something to go well with my existing bedroom furniture, I came up with nada.  They all seemed a bit… clunky.  Unable to find anything to perfectly fit my style and room, I decided to DIY a vanity with a streamlined Parsons Desk, a big comfy ottoman, a wall mirror, and all of the makeup and skincare storage one could need.

My style of makeup has always been “natural.”  I like a fresh, even face with nude lips, bronze blush and a slender line of smoky eye liner.  What’s funny about the “natural” look is that it actually requires a lot of makeup.  While my colorful eye palettes are gathering dust, I have a thousand color-correcting creams, powders, liquids, and sticks.  There are so many concealers, highlighters, illuminators, and contouring tools.

My makeup stash is pretty beefy, taking up three deep drawers in my bathroom, but I really only use a couple handfuls of products on a daily basis.  These essentials deserved their own space somewhere pretty and easily accessed, and so the vanity was born.

DIY Parsons Desk Vanity

First step to creating your perfect vanity is to find the perfect table.  My initial thought was to actually go with a deep, floating shelf. This would work beautifully and allows you to set the height according to your needs/seat.  Unable to find a drawered shelf that I liked, I ended up opting for a Parson Desk for its clean lines, ideal height and decent size drawer.

Next product to consider is the seat.  Depending on what you can find/your style, you could choose a classic vanity backed chair, a stool, a pouf, or an ottoman.  I actually have a few ottomans that are currently just taking up storage space in my garage. The big blocky ottoman ended up being the PERFECT height to fit the desk for sitting or sliding under to store.  Yes.  I topped it with a fuzzy blanket to make it even more comfortable.

Clearly, step three is to find a vanity mirror.  This was the hardest step for me as at first all I could find were wooden framed or overly ornamental framed wall mirrors – not what I was looking for.  Then it happened.  I was browsing through stacks of mirrors and there it was – a beautiful mother of pearl mirror.  Sold!  I just love how it adds a subtle touch of femininity without being too “girlie”… super sophisticated and really, really heavy!

The final pieces you’ll need for a functional, beautiful vanity is storage for your makeup, skincare and haircare.  Like I mentioned before, the drawer was a big reason why I chose a Parsons Desk.  Into it, I put a clear organizer tray for little bits and pieces of things.

On top, I put a couple makeup organizers that hold my most used items.  All you need then is a bouquet of stunning chamomile flowers and a sweet-smelling candle.  I’m in vanity Heaven!

Remember when I said I prefer the “fresh” and “natural” makeup look and how that can take a lot of products to achieve?  Well, the better your natural skin is, the fewer products you need to use, and thanks to my wacky hormones, I’ve started to have 30 year old woman acne from time to time.  I never had a problem with acne as a kid.  A pimple here and there, of course, but never ravaged like some of my unfortunate friends.  When you turn 30, you think your acne days are behind you, but that is not always the case!

Introducing the first and only prescription strength retinoid now available OTC!  Differin® Gel is perfect for clearing and preventing acne, just what I needed.  This is the newest advancement and ingredient in the OTC acne category in over 30 years!

Differin® Gel clears breakouts where they start – deep down in the pores.  The gel also prevents breakouts (my favorite benefit) and as a result, restores skin’s texture and tone.  Better skin, less color-correcting makeup to hoard, right?

Rather than using a spot treatment, Differin® Gel is to be applied all over the face in a thin layer – once a day, every day. Spot treatments only heal that spot. If you are suffering from mild to moderate acne, this is a product you need to pick up. Please use caution when using Differin® Gel with more than one acne treatment or glycolic acid product because this could lead to irritation.

I’ll be back in 8 weeks to share my results with Differin® Gel, so stay tuned.  I just started using the product this morning and am happy to report, no irritation with my hyper sensitive skin – I’m excited to see the results!  Find Differin® Gel at Target in the beauty section with other skincare – NEW!
