DIY bat pumpkin toppers {front door decor}

One of the things I love most about my home is that it has a front courtyard.  It is the perfect outdoor area to decorate for the seasons and it is gated, so I don’t have to worry about anything going missing or being broken.  For fall, I decided to go with a pumpkin patch feel – hay bales, pumpkins and mums.  During the month of October, I mixed in some spooky elements – blood-dripped lights, skeleton flamingos and a few flying bats created by my 8 year old to top my pumpkins!

The front entry is really so important to decorate as it is what guests and trick-or-treaters see first!   It also makes me smile when I get home from running around all day, exhausted.  It is a big welcome home!  I do keep it simple, though and fall is so super easy.

I like to incorporate a craft or two my kids did that year and this time it was bat pumpkin toppers.  Toilet paper rolls are something I keep stocked in my craft bin at all times.  They are perfect for so many different crafts.  Stumbling around Pinterest, looking for inspiration, I came across a cute flying bat tutorial from Moms Have Questions Too.  I loved the simple and straightforward craft – perfect for kids, so I made a couple tweaks like swapping the construction paper for foam (since ours will be outside) and adding gold glitter eyes to catch the lights at night.

Here’s what you need:

  • black foam sheets
  • gold glitter foam sheet
  • toilet paper rolls, cut in half
  • scissors, glue gun, pencil
  • Flying Bat Template

  1. Head over to Moms Have Questions Too and print off her flying bat template.  I only used the body (which I lengthened to fit my rolls) and the wings part of the template.
  2. With a glue gun, adhere the black foam body around the halved toilet paper roll.  Glue the wings onto the back center.
  3. Cut out eyes from the gold glitter foam sheet.  Glue eyes onto the bat face.  Glue ears (I just cut matching long triangles without a template) onto the inside of the bat body behind the eyes.
  4. Top your pumpkins!

If you have ever been without something, you love to buy in bulk.  The feeling I get leaving Sam’s Club® is like a hug from my mom – and I can’t be the only one.  It is comforting to know I’m all stocked up.  Toilet paper is one of the “always” that I grab when I’m at Sam’s.  This past trip, I purchased a Scott® 1000 bonus pack  and it is safe to say, I won’t be needing toilet paper any time soon.  At 36 rolls per pack and with 100 extra extra sheets per roll, that’s like three extra rolls!  Just remember to save your rolls so you can make all kinds of crafts!

One thing I couldn’t live without is my Sam’s Club® membership.  There are certain items I just can’t get anywhere else like my favorite goat cheese, my huge pack of smoked salmon and all the coffee I can drink.  If you don’t have a membership already to Sam’s Club®, consider it!  Also, download the free Albotta app and under “grocery” find Sam’s Club®. There you will see a Scott® 1000 $5 offer to unlock and use.  Simply head to Sam’s Club® and purchase your supply.  Scan the receipt into Ibotta and earn $5 back!
