four detox tips for bikini-ready skin {spring clean}

This shop is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #TENways  http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV.

Here in Palm Springs, our weather is in the 70s and 80s… prime time to live in this desert valley.  I’m shopping for new bathing suits, sundresses and planning my warm weather hair (before I know it, it will be 110+ outside).  Of course, most people are thinking about losing a few pounds and toning up in preparation for the pool — I certainly am — but let’s not forget the importance of smooth, glowing skin!  When you bare it all, no matter how in-shape you are, you cannot hide dry, dull skin.  It is, after all, our largest and most exposed organ!  Luckily, there are a few amazingly easy steps you can take for bikini-ready skin.

Dry Brushing

Have you been following the latest beauty trends?  Dry brushing is actually an ancient practice, but has become newly popular as of late.  This is my favorite technique that drastically improves circulation while sloughing away dull, dead skin.  It is a detoxifying process that stimulates the lymphatic and immune systems, and even reduces toxin harboring cellulite. Seriously, guys, this simple practice will give you completely regenerated, supple skin.

Use a wide, long-handled (for those hard-to-reach spots) natural bristle brush.  With dry skin and a dry brush, brush in upward strokes towards your heart.  Start with the soles of your feet and move up the legs, arms, back and abdomen.  Do this before your shower.  It takes, eh, 5 minutes.  Much like exercise, this gets the blood flowing and is a great way to start your day — so make time for it!  I seriously feel energized afterwards and my skin is so super soft!

Hydration

Drink up.  Dehydrated skin is dull, dry, totally NOT bikini-ready skin.  Your skin is the last organ to receive nutrients and the FIRST to show signs of deficiency.  Take your vitamins, eat clean and hydrate!!  Liquids effectively flush the body, taking toxins with them along the way.

While we are on the topic of hydration, I thought I would dispel a couple myths about drinking carbonated beverages.  Yes, drink your water people — lots of it — but do not discount other hydration sources.   Carbonated beverages like the new Four Ten Calorie DPSG products are a great source of hydration, and at only 10 calories, a tasty beverage that won’t wreck your bikini body.  The four products are: 7UP, Sunkist, A&W and Canada Dry.  I’m completely into Sunkist again, a first since I was a child, because the flavor is THERE but the calories aren’t.

I’m pretty much obsessed with all things ginger, especially ginger ale.  And while I can easily trade diet soda for regular, ginger ale has been a sticking point.  The diet just doesn’t taste the same.  I headed to Walmart to scout out this new soda and found Canada Dry TEN tastes INCREDIBLE and is the perfect compromise.  While I’m not downing tons of calories and sugars, I don’t have to give up the flavor.  .

I love ginger SO much that one of my favorite beverages is Canada Dry TEN Ginger Ale with freshly shaved ginger.  Top with a few blackberries and I’m in Heaven.  It is the perfect, refreshing drink I could sip all day by the pool.

Switch up your diet

20% of our daily water intake actually comes from food, another great reason to eat fresh, natural foods (produce like lettuce, watermelon and broccoli are almost ALL water).  When you head out, grab food and drink that will keep your body fueled and skin looking great.

Immediately cut out refined sugar.  Large amounts of the stuff will cause damage to collagen and elastin in the skin.  Go easy on the alcohol, don’t even LOOK at tobacco products and all processed foods in general should go.  To ensure your skin is fed nutrients properly, you need a balanced diet of acid and alkaline forming foods (leading to a balanced pH).  Many of the foods I’m talking about are high in antioxidants as well, so big skin bonus there.  Since our diets tend to already be full of acidifying foods, here is a quick smoothie FULL of alkalizing, antioxidant-rich foods.  Don’t be fooled, citrus fruits are actually alkaline forming despite their acidic nature… confusing I know.

Sweat it out

Yep, there is no getting away from the endless upsides to exercise.  Sweating clears your pores of dirt and metals, so choose an activity that really gets you sweating.  Here in the desert, doing anything outside makes you sweat, but my favorite detoxifying activity is Bikram Yoga.  A 90 minute Bikram Yoga (yoga taught in a room heated to 105°F and 40% humidity) class will have you sweating bullets.  Also holding the special poses will cleanse your organs and focusing on your breathing will give your body more oxygen.  It’s a miracle exercise.

    I’ve become a big fan of dry brushing lately and since I’m pregnant, hydrating has taken on a whole new meaning since I feel like I need to do it every 10 minutes.
