Now that we have successfully made it past Halloween, I’m ready to start planning and purchasing for Christmas. This year, we have an additional family member – Sophia the Chihuahua, our rescued dog. Pets bring a lot of additional fun to holidays, so I’m excited to have her here to celebrate with us. She received an early Christmas present last week – a really cool doghouse with a sun deck. She spends a good amount of time outside, so I thought she really needed her own space (and I’d like less hair on my outdoor sectional). Today, Savannah and I decided to decorate her house for Christmas and it couldn’t have turned out cuter.
First, let us celebrate the fact that I built this doghouse all by my lonesome. I guess the more appropriate word to use is “assembled” but still, there were power tools involved. It’s cute, right? This house is perfect for my sun-loving chihuahua since she can run up the stairs and hang out in the sunshine.
Now that the weather cooling off and my dog will not hang outside without a sweater and a blanket to burrow into. My less-than-4-lb Chihuahua gets cold really easily, so I’m trying to be very considerate as we enter “fall/winter” here in Palm Springs. Our days may be sunny and in the 80s, but the nights really do drop low in temps, so I knew Sophia needed a covered doghouse for her first winter with us. We also live on the edge of a windfarm, in a valley between mountains, so the wind gets insane here. Every dog needs a shelter here during the windy seasons. Why not fill it with holiday-tastic accessories?
So how does one decorate a dog house for the holidays? Well, the first step is clearly a nice warm blanket and/or cushion that feels festive. I went for a really super soft tartan pattern blanket that my little chihuahua can burrow into. And then, where there are dog beds, there are soft chew/play toys, so I had to get this winter moose for Sophia.
On the sundeck (or if you don’t have one, just on the ground next to the house) I really wanted a Christmas tree. There are not a whole lot of evergreens in my town yet, so I went with this super fragrant rosemary “tree”. When choosing a Christmas tree for your doghouse, make sure to not pick something off the toxic for dogs list.
I’m not ready to decorate the whole house and yard yet, but starting small with Sophia’s house really put me in the Christmas mood! I have had Christmas songs stuck in my head all day and I have to admit, I’m loving the festive glow coming from the outside doghouse. The string lights added the perfect final touch, just woven through the sundeck lattice.
Of course, no doghouse is complete without food and snacks. Sophia, I’ve realized, is a picky eater. She has turned her nose up at many a dog food, so when I find one she really likes, I generally stick with it. I like to buy her foods specific to small breed dogs like Purina Beneful Incredibites. This new dry dog food has meat as the #1 ingredient and no added sugar. In addition to the meat, happy dogs will find whole grains and vegetables, creating a nutritious mix rich in antioxidants.
Even more so than with her regular food, Sophia is super picky about her snacks. Purina Beggin’ Strips are absolutely her favorite since they are made with real bacon, her favorite food on the planet. Her top two variety choices are Beggin’ Strips Bacon & Cheese Flavors and Beggin’ Strips Bacon & Peanut Butter. She goes crazy for them and they are the reason I have been able to train her at all. Chihuahuas are not known for their trainability, so potty training her and getting her to use her doghouse stairs would’ve been nearly impossible without delicious treats!
New to the menu at home is Purina Dentalife Daily Oral Care, which help clean those hard-to-reach teeth in your dog’s mouth. I’m a big fan of products that make dog maintenance easier, so I was super pleased to see Sophia chomp away on these chews! Spread holiday love to your furry friends with the help of Purina!
