cactus cut-out pool coverup {DIY}

Welcome to all day pool weather here in Palm Springs, CA ! Spring is in full swing and we are all preparing, shopping and daydreaming about the long, sunny days of summer. When the pool is a lifestyle like it is here in Palm Springs, you have just as many, if not more, swimsuit coverups as you do swimsuits. In honor of yesterday (Earth Day) I wanted to share a DIY coverup that uses an old tshirt (your husband or boyfriend’s will do best) that is so super simple!

I have been on a constant bathing suit search for the past couple of weeks, which is the most frustrating type of shopping bar none… well bras are right up there too.  I was blessed/cursed with a long torso which is great for bikinis but really terrible for one pieces, which is my current mood until I work out more.  Ahhh we all have our bathing suit woes!  Why is it so difficult?!  Well at least there is always a coverup to the rescue!

Theoretically, you could cut out any shape/design and I encourage you to play around with this!  I have a bit of an obsession with all things desert, which is partially why I chose to move to one.  I collect succulents and cactus like its my job, so I went with a summery cactus design on front.  Simply make a chalk outline, decide where you will cut and get going!  I used a razorblade because I think it is more precise, but scissors will get the job done too!

Once your design has been cut, give it a good stretch.  This will cause the cut parts to curl, giving it a better overall look.   Here is when I decided that the front design just wasn’t enough.  It still felt like my husband’s tee, not a coverup.  This is when the sleeves came off!

better.  …and a back heart design formed.  The back had the same method as the front.  Chalk outline, mark the cuts also in chalk, cut, stretch.

The beauty of these simple cut out coverups is that they also look great with shorts!  Perfect for the 120 degree summer we’re about to enter here in Palm Springs, the airflow is awesome.  The cuts allow your suit to dry, plus you can show a little summer skin but keep it all covered more or less.

I think we should talk detergent.  I am a laundry gal.  I certainly hate the mounds of laundry that accumulate when one has multiple children, but I care so very much about it.  I spend a good amount per garment in price, thought or time for my whole family.  I buy designer and small business (pricey) and I thrift (all about the time put in).  If you think about your clothing purchases, you should think about your detergent.  I want my colors to stay true, certainly black and white, so I go with method.

Thinking about Earth Month, the NEW 4x concentrated method laundry detergent actually works great in cold water so you use less energy for every load.  It also helps clothing hold its integrity for longer.  The formula is biodegradable (and hypoallergenic) and the recyclable bottle is made with 100% post-consumer recycled materials!!  This is a detergent you can feel good about using.

Perhaps the best point to note is the fragrances.  Forget the grandma florals.  method has modern scents for everyone – fruity (ginger mango), floral (spring garden), herbaceous-woody (beach sage and fresh clover), and free + clear (no fragrance).  I happen to ADORE the beach sage and fresh clover scents.  There could be no better laundry fragrance!!
