Lulu Organics: holistic essentials

lip balm 01 Lulu Organics: holistic essentialsI first saw Lulu Organics in one of my fashion magazines where they were raving over their products. Lulu Organics is a homegrown holistic beauty company whose ingredients are simple, healing and safe. They currently have two lip balms and their famous hair powder. Lulu Organic’s Ruby Mint Lip Balm is my new go-to, use-everyday, can’t-live-without-it lip balm. It has a hint of mint for a cool and refreshing feeling as you apply it, but the barely there, ruby color (derived from organic alkanet root and beet root) that it puts on your lips is perfect! It’s absolutely one of the best must-haves for the summer when you can get away with little to no makeup to add just a hint of barely there color to your lips.

Lulu Organics also makes a hair powder, which they’re famous for. What’s a hair powder you ask? It’s a powder that you use on the days that you skip hair washing. You sprinkle a dime size amount of powder on your hands and rub it through the roots of your hair. Not only does your hair suddenly have the look of hair that was just washed and blown dry again, but it smells as though it was too. The silky, talc-free formula soaks up oil and leaves hair smelling clean without weighing it down. It’s also really handy for adding a little extra texture for styling and to help pins stay in your fine hair. Not only should we not wash our hair everyday because it’s damaging, but as busy mom’s sometimes it’s just not possible. Whether you have a new baby and people are always popping over, or you’re chasing after a toddler and realized you have an early doctor’s appointment, this is your new solution.

Lulu originally created the recipe as a gift for her best friend when she realized that the talcum powder they had been dousing their hair with could be potentially carcinogenic. She read up on beauty product ingredients, and set up meetings with beauty companies and eventually came up with a fragrant combination of natural and organic ingredients. The talc-free powder is made with white clay, baking soda, USDA Organic corn starch, rice powder,  Oregon Tilth Certified Organic horsetail powder and essential oils. So it’s healthy and safe for us to use while helping us look our best.

Depth: live beneath the surface

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Once upon a time, two marine biologists met and came together in a mutual love for the sea (and each other).  They then took the power of their knowledge and created a line called Depth.  Made from a blend of sea botanicals, Depth enhances the skin’s ability to remain healthy, hydrated, and resilient.  We’ve known for awhile that sea botanicals are rich in moisturizing properties, but they also supply essential fatty acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, and amino acids, which protect and even detoxify the skin.  Depth utilizes three different classes of sea botanicals: Brown (Phaeophyta), Green (Chlorophyta), and Red (Rhodophyta) algae, bringing you the optimal in hydration, vitamins, and minerals.  Reading the list of ingredients is like taking a trip through the sea: giant kelp, sea lettuce, seaweed, and sea palm.

default6 Depth: live beneath the surface

I was excited and curious to see what Depth held in those magical blue bottles.  Unleashing the power of the sea upon my dry, desert skin was pleasing to the senses.   The natural aroma is beautiful yet not overpowering.  The lotion was smoothly applied and it easily took to my parched skin.  My skin was left feeling moisturized, smooth, and elastic.  I am a tough critic when it comes to lotions.  They can be too thin, too thick; they can leave residue or disappear instantly.   Depth was the perfect blend and I didn’t find myself needing to reapply again until the night.  And because the ingredients are 100% vegan, 70% certified organic, hypo-allergenic, and paraben, phthalate, SLS and synthetic fragrance-free, I felt comfortable using it even on my daughter’s skin.

The same went for the other products, the hand soap is divine.  Not only did it not dry my hands out like typical soaps, but it actually left my hands feeling moisturized. Imagine a soap that actually leaves your hands moisturized! I’m usually running to the lotion every time I wash my hands.  I highly recommend this product to anyone who is an avid hand washer (yes, I’m talking to all you germ-a-phobes) .  I also tested the body wash and it smelled so wonderful I didn’t want to get out of the shower (not typical).  During the application, I felt as if I was pumping a smooth soapy lotion onto my skin.  After rinsing my skin I was left feeling smooth (no residue), and once again, not dried out from the soap/water combination.  I didn’t even feel the need to instantly apply lotion, even though I did anyways because I loved

Being so environmentally conscious with what’s INSIDE the bottle, of course the container is made from 50% post-consumer waste and is recyclable.  Also being socially responsible, Depth partners with Camp SEA Lab which is a non-profit organization that provides authentic marine experiences for children who might not otherwise have the opportunity.  Raising awareness about the state of our earth is so critical, and this includes the marine environment.  Camp SEA Lab also creates an appreciation for the marine environment in these young, impressionable kids.

To see all of the products available, head over to the site (with full ingredient lists).  Where can you find these delightful products?  Why at your local Whole Foods Market of course.  They even proudly display the “Whole Foods Exclusive and Premium Complaint” sticker on the bottles.  No Whole Foods in your area?  Try Drugstore.com to stock up on your supply.  At $7-10 a product, you can’t miss.

Special thanks to Depth for providing samples.

Le Baby: to fix le hair

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Baby hair can be quite difficult to manage and I know this first hand.  It can be thin or thick, frizzy or fly away, and, my gosh, what their hair can look like post-nap.  Le Baby hair gel offers a unique product that I think most moms can appreciate.  If you’re a lucky one and your kid’s hair lays perfectly normal, you can still use Le Baby to style the hair.  A fun mohawk or a polished bob may be in your child’s future, as is all the rage in Hollywood.  This product is free of harsh chemicals, hypoallergenic, free of parabens and sulfates.  It is not tested on animals and it’s fragrance free.  All in all, perfect for the most sensitive of baby and kid scalps.

My problem: My daughter has beautiful yet unruly curly hair.  Her wispy and winding hair can sometimes drive me mad.  The curls take on a life of their own and show no signs of being tamed.  Hark! I hear an angel!  It is Le Baby swooping in to save her loopy locks.  I love this gel.  It gives her defined curls that are soft to the touch, no sticky-turn-hard gel here.  Even after the worst nap or hat hair, I can save the curls and we can scoot directly out into the judging public.
